Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We started Forest Park Pharmacy about three years ago with a simple goal: to truly serve our community in Fort Worth with honest, affordable medication access. After years working in traditional pharmacy settings, my wife Glenda and I saw firsthand how the insurance system was failing both patients and providers. Insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) often drive up costs through middlemen markups, prior authorizations, and opaque pricing that leaves people paying far more out-of-pocket than necessary. We realized we could actually charge patients less—sometimes dramatically less—by cutting insurance out entirely and going direct. So, we made the bold move: we “fired” insurance. We switched to a straightforward cash-pay, cost-plus model, where we base prices on our actual acquisition cost plus a fair markup for our services. No hidden fees, no memberships, no games—just transparent pricing everyone can see upfront through our online price checker.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our journey hasn’t been entirely smooth. To make meaningful progress toward our goal, we first had to educate people about the serious harms caused by pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). Everyone expects to insurance to help them with their healthcare costs. Fortunately, their practices are so egregious and shocking that simply shining a light on them has generated significant attention on social media—and that organic visibility has been a major driver of our growth

We’ve been impressed with Forest Park Pharmacy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Forest Park Pharmacy is a locally-owned, independent pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas, dedicated to putting patients first with transparent, affordable healthcare. We grew frustrated with corporate pharmacies’ focus on profits over people—often herding patients through with minimal personal attention and opaque pricing—we created an alternative model. By eliminating insurance middlemen and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), Forest Park operates on a straightforward cash-pay, cost-plus approach, offering clear pricing without memberships, prior authorizations, or hidden fees.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Dropping insurance was a significant risk—most patients expect to use their coverage for primary care, and walking away from it could have alienated our community. Yet staying in-network would have continued to drain our resources through low reimbursements and endless paperwork, ultimately threatening our sustainability and forcing higher out-of-pocket costs on patients. By making the switch to a direct-pay model, we preserved our ability to deliver high-quality, accessible care without those constraints.
