Meet Natalie Cross of Your House Or Mine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Cross.

Natalie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
For as long as I can remember I had wanted to take a ceramics class. I was always thinking when I finish this or that I will have time to sign up. In 2015 when I found myself laid off from my job I finally had time and a lot of it:) I signed up to take ceramics at the Creative Arts Center (CAC) in Dallas. I loved it right from the start but hadn’t really thought about selling my pieces until a fellow student with an MFA suggested it to me. So I put some spoons and plates on facebook and friends started calling me asking to come over and see them.

Then I started adding them to my Instagram and soon I was taking orders and shipping all over the US. In August of 2016, I purchased a used kiln and set up shop in my backyard studio. November of 2016 I signed up to have a booth at a local art show and I sold out! My style and quality has evolved over the last few years and I am now selling to stores in Dallas, Mckinney, Johnson City and Marfa. At 40 years young I finally found my calling and true talent. I absolutely love making pottery.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Supply and demand is a constant struggle. It’s hard when I am the only maker to keep up and keep my stores stocked with what they need. Luckily I have my husband Scott, who has a business degree and can help me with decision making when it comes to these things.

Time management is key and having somewhat of a set schedule every day. Setting up the studio took some time. I had to stay patient while I collected my tools and found deals on equipment.

Please tell us about Your House Or Mine.
Your House Or Mine specializes in handmade one of a kind tableware. Plates, bowls, platters and spoons. I would say we are best known for our spoons! That first art show I mentioned I took 200 spoons and sold every one of them. I am really inspired by nature so my pieces are rustic yet have a modern feel. We are known for our neutral color palette and our lovely imperfections. I am so proud of my brand and what I am creating.

I think one on one personal attention sets us apart. I love collaborating with clients, whether it is in one bowl or a 12 place setting. I love showing them what their options are and seeing them have fun with the process. I like to imagine them having dinner parties with friends and family and really using their tableware for years to come, I think that makes it special.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Staying with my grandparents was always a good time. They always had good food, crisp sheets that smelled so clean and we were always entertained by the great outdoors. Climbing trees, playing hide and seek, we were always outside at our Grandparents house. I also grew up antiquing with my Grandmother and learning that trade from her was fun.

Pricing:

  • Spoons $12-40
  • Platters $130
  • Dinnerware starting at $30
