Inspiring Conversations with Sam O’Bier of PUMPJAXE Mobile Axe Throwing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam O’Bier.

Sam, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
PUMPJAXE urban axe throwing opened June 1, 2019 in Tyler, Tx. I am not the original owner. I went there for my birthday to try something new in June of 2020. I was naturally pretty good at throwing axes and decided to join the women’s league. My first season I just barely lost to win the whole league. The owners thought I would make a good coach and offered me a job on the weekends. I took it and enjoyed working there. They eventually were looking to sell the business for personal reasons and I bought it in November of 2021. From there, I moved locations, got a beer license, added pool tables, and built a bar. It was great for a while… we were doing pool tournaments as well as axe throwing. Eventually, in this economy, we just weren’t making enough to be profitable so we decided to shut down the brick and mortar and go mobile. That happened in 2024. Since then, we have enjoyed taking our mobile trailer to events such as weddings, festivals, parties, church events, etc. It’s a really fun activity. We even recently have added some other activities people can add to their events, such as mini golf, cornhole, an inflatable obstacle course, and an inflatable 5 in 1 carnival game. We have been staying very busy in the seasons where the weather is nice and very much enjoy what we do.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not! I did not know the first thing about being a business owner when I bought the company. It was also one of those things where I thought I knew so much but I was still pretty young and had to figure out a lot of things the hard way. When I moved locations, it costed the whole savings of the company to pay the contractor to get the building how we needed it, just to have to close and go mobile a few years later. I also had ran a large axe throwing tournament for the first time and had so many mistakes. There were so many instances I just had to try, learn from my mistakes, and try again. Definitely a learning curve.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about PUMPJAXE Mobile Axe Throwing?
We are a mobile axe throwing company that services areas of East Texas. We have a kids axe throwing target for the little ones made of plastic and foam. We also have an inflatable obstacle course, 5 in 1 carnival game, mini golf, and cornhole available as add ons. We specialize in entertainment for events such as festivals, parties, weddings, church events, etc. I am proud of my brand because of our journey and our highly satisfied customers. We have went from one brick and mortar location to another, then to mobile only. Regardless of the changes, we are still a well established company and trusted name. We are proud to say we are highly recommended.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I always stayed very busy. I played a bunch of sports, I was in band/colorguard, and in different clubs in school. I was one of those kids that didn’t quite fit in one particular place, I was kind of all over. I always had good grades but would get into trouble here and there for talking back. Seems like I always knew I wanted to be my own boss.
