Conversations with Caroline Jefferys

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Jefferys.

Hi Caroline, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When our family moved to Keller 26 years ago, the local bakery scene was quite sparse. As someone who loved planning themed birthday parties, I found it nearly impossible to find custom cakes that matched the vision I had in mind. I kept thinking back to the nostalgic birthday cakes of my own childhood, the ones made with real buttercream frosting. Driven by that memory, I decided to take matters into my own hands and enrolled in local baking and decorating classes. What started as a labor of love for my daughter’s birthdays quickly grew as friends began asking for my creations. When the Texas Cottage Food Law passed, it was the perfect opportunity to turn my lifelong hobby into a dedicated home business.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have only been a few obstacles along the way. I love the creative side of my work. The more technical things like setting up and maintaining a website has occasionally been challenging. Using social media has been an easier way to share information with customers, community and friends.
Being a sole proprietor, I’ve had to learn the art of balance. Handling everything myself, there are times when space and time constraints mean I have to decline jobs to ensure I maintain the quality my customers expect.
Sometimes I am asked to make something I’ve never tried before, but I am always ready to learn new techniques. The challenges keep things interesting!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in custom cakes and cookies that are the centerpiece for the milestones of life. I love taking a customers vision for the event and creating something unique that contributes to a memorable occasion. Being a part of the same community I’ve had the privilege to make birthday cakes for children as they grow into adults and celebrate new beginnings like graduations and engagement parties.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The characteristic I feel is most important to my success is my refusal to compromise on either flavor or aesthetics. I often hear from new customers that they’ve previously had to choose between a cake that looks great but doesn’t taste good, or one that tastes delicious but lacks professional decoration. My goal is to always deliver both. To achieve this, I prioritize freshness above all else, baking and decorating as close to the pickup date as possible. By using high quality, homemade ingredients and maintaining a special attention to detail, I ensure that every treat is as delightful to eat as it is to look at.
