Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole DeStefano.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicole. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my career as a counselor in domestic and sexual violence, during this time I saw so much correlation with women and how they felt about themselves and what they believed they deserved from a relationship. I wanted so badly to help these women see and feel their worth. I decided at 27 years old to attend cosmetology school and begin investing my time helping women in a more immediate way; through changing their perception of themselves through their physical appearance.
I believe what I do impacts people far more than simply how they look; I with my hands help shape the way someone views themselves on a day to day basis for the weeks that follow. Anyone who has had a bad haircut or color can attest to the impact this has had on their esteem. I strive to bring my personal best everyday behind the chair. This belief has led me to the slogan for the Beauty Hive “it’s not just about how you look, but how you feel”.
After school, I began at a commission salon in NC with a manager who believed in me and uplifted me when I just didn’t believe in myself. Within 18 months of working in a commission salon, I had established enough of a clientele to branch out on my own and begin a hair studio; moving from NC was incredibly hard and scary because I was walking away from what I had built. I recently moved to Texas with my husband and decided to continue to invest in myself and my business by opening a hair studio in Trophy Club.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Getting out of my own way has been my biggest challenge. Fear is normal when entering any new adventure and I had to walk through the fear and fire to invest in myself and my dreams.
When I first began this adventure, I was very obese and never felt like I looked the part of a hairstylist. It’s funny I so badly wanted to help women feel better about themselves but I beat myself up the whole time for not being the “ideal”. With love and support from my clients, coworkers and my family I have lost 110 lbs. and am healthier now than ever. This industry has impacted me in ways I never expected. I got involved to help change women’s lives and in turn every client I see has touched and changed my life.
The fear of investing in my business here in Texas is alive and well. I am building a clientele from scratch but the bills don’t stop if I don’t have clients in my chair; I continue to push forward with the belief that I offer something unique in this industry and with faith and persistence I will succeed.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beauty Hive – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The beauty hive is a place for women to come together in a relaxed, inviting and chic atmosphere where we can collaborate and work toward our common goal of making your vision a reality. Bring your bestie or your mom and enjoy a girl’s day of pampering, a glass of wine or coffee and some yummy snacks are all included with your visit.
I specialize in blonding and balayage, a good blonde hair color is a beautiful thing. I’m known for taking a lot of time with my clients to help them achieve their hair goals including offering plenty of styling tips so when they leave the salon they can recreate their new look every day.
I’m most proud of the vibe and environment at the Beauty Hive, it’s a warm welcoming space and every client leaves with a hug.
What sets me apart from others is my ability to listen and be honest. I am not a hairstylist who simply flatters to gain a new client; if something won’t look great or match your skin tone I will always be honest and offer additional suggestions on things that will work.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I hope to grow my business and clientele quickly and take on an assistant or hair student to mentor. I believe passing on education is a great gift and I want to help build up others in this industry. I am looking forward to building a brand in the Trophy Club area and being the go to place for hair color. Long term, I plan to hire employees and be more than a one chair salon. I want to make the Beauty Hive a culture.
