Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Mares.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, I’m Michelle Mares. I didn’t always see myself going into cosmetology. In fact, when I first started, I wasn’t fully invested in the idea. I enrolled in cosmetology school while I was still in high school, mainly because it felt like a great opportunity to get a head start on something, though at the time, I didn’t realize just how important that decision would become.
My original plan was to do hair while attending college and pursuing a degree in psychology… or at least, that’s what I thought my path would be. After graduating high school with my cosmetology license, I began working, focusing primarily on men’s hair, while also balancing life as a full-time college student.
As time went on, something shifted. I found myself becoming more passionate about hair and the impact it allowed me to have on people. I fell in love with not just the creative side, but the way I could make someone feel confident, seen, and uplifted. It wasn’t just about appearance; it was emotional, too.
Eventually, I realized that college wasn’t the path meant for me. My passion for hair had grown into something much bigger, and I decided to pursue it fully. As I continued working, I reached a point where I outgrew my environment and knew it was time to take a leap and see where else this career could take me.
Today, I’ve been an independent stylist for seven years. My journey hasn’t been without challenges, there have been closed doors, setbacks, and moments where others doubted me. But through it all, I kept pushing forward. Even when it felt like people were trying to bring me down, I stayed focused and proved to myself that I was capable. I’ve grown into exactly who I knew I could become.
After 11 years in the industry, I’ve learned that everyone’s path looks different. Being my own boss has been incredibly rewarding, but it’s also come with its own set of challenges. Keeping up with trends, continuing my education, and balancing work with home life hasn’t always been easy. On top of that, managing the business side taxes, inventory, scheduling, and more has been a journey in itself.
It’s been a wild ride, but one I wouldn’t trade for anything. Even during the difficult moments, I’ve truly loved what I do.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
A strong career comes with its share of challenges, and mine has been no exception. I’ve faced setbacks, closed doors, and moments where others doubted my ability to succeed. But I’ve never allowed those experiences to define me or hold me back. Instead, they’ve strengthened my determination. I’ve always believed I have everything within me to succeed, and that mindset has kept me moving forward.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Hair by Michelle ?
I’ve always loved the creativity my career allows me to express. I enjoy working across a wide range of styles from bold, vivid colors to soft, lived in looks. Exploring both ends of the spectrum has pushed me to grow, refine my skills, and continuously learn new techniques that I bring into every appointment.
Beyond the creative aspect, I value the connections I build with my clients. I take pride in creating a space where they feel comfortable, supported, and able to relax. Being able to offer not just a service, but an experience where someone can unwind and feel their best, is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is making an impact both through my work and the experience I create for my clients. I care deeply about helping people feel confident, comfortable, and truly seen. Hair is creative and technical, but for me, it’s also emotional. Being able to change how someone feels about themselves, even in a small way, is what drives me.
It also matters to me to keep growing both as an artist and as a business owner. This industry is always evolving, and I take pride in continuing to learn, adapt, and push myself creatively. That growth has been a big part of my journey, especially through the challenges I’ve faced.
At the core of it all, I value resilience, connection, and authenticity. Those are the things that have shaped my career and continue to motivate me every day.
