Life & Work with Daisy Bermejo of Oak Lawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daisy Bermejo.

Hi Daisy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being an artist has always been a big part of who I am. From a young age, I would get in trouble for drawing on other kids, and ditching gym to hang out in the art room. I went to college to become an art teacher. My mom and grandad were teachers, so I thought that was what I was supposed to do as well. When interviewing at schools for jobs, I just didn’t feel like it was where I belonged. During Covid, being home allowed me to really define where I wanted to be in the art world. I have always loved the idea of being a tattoo artist, but never thought that would be in the cards. But i won’t know until i try, right? So, I worked on my portfolio and drew almost every day. When the world opened back up I set out to find an apprenticeship. It wasn’t an easy journey, but being where I am today makes it worth the trek.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s definitely some imposter syndrome that creeps in from time to time. There’s always this internal struggle of whether you’re good enough. It’s important to remind yourself that you’re only trying to be better than you were yesterday. And not the people around you.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a tattoo artist in the Oak Lawn area. I like to say I specialize in color etherealism, just because I like to mix styles. But in the tattoo world, I specialize in Neo traditional and traditional tattoos, I also enjoy doing color realism. I’m mostly known for my color work, that seems to be what catches everyone’s eye initially. My work is very feminine forward with an edge. As far as subject matter, I love florals, animals, lady faces, and vintage pieces. A recent favorite of mine is a work in progress. It’s a leg piece of a phoenix!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to not compare my progress to others. It’s easy to get in your head and think you’re falling behind. When in reality progress isn’t linear. Again, it’s you against yesterday’s you, not anyone else.
