Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Carole.
Hi Liz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started stand-up comedy in June of 2024 after a year of writing material (but not having actually performed it). I always knew I wanted to be a comedian, but I didn’t know that was an option available to me. I grew up with working class parents in a small, rural town in Oklahoma where pursuing a career in the arts was uncommon to say the least. I figured being a performer or working in the entertainment industry was something that you had to be born into, or in proximity to. Once I decided that I had to try my material out on a stage, I didn’t know where to even begin. I think I literally Googled “how to start doing stand-up comedy”. I ended up on the Dallas Comedy Club website signing up for the Wednesday night open mic. I made it on the list for the following week’s mic, and I showed up with a couple of friends in tow for moral support. I did 5 minutes that I don’t remember and felt more like myself than I ever had. Since then, I have done shows all over Texas, as well as shows in Oklahoma and Los Angeles.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been smooth enough, and I am incredibly grateful for that. There have been plenty of challenges and setbacks, but I try not to dwell on the negative. I’m comfortable with the idea that there will always be challenges in this line of work. For me, my greatest obstacle has been overcoming self-doubt and limiting beliefs. Can major career success happen for someone like me? Am I good enough for the career I desire? The answer is, of course, yes. We are all worthy of our desires, but the challenge lies in actually believing it to be true.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a standup comedian.
My comedic style blends chronically online Gen Z humor with older references inherited from my Gen X parents and deeply personal (and often embarrassing) stories that the audience can relate to. I’m really an open book on stage, and I think the audience can sense that when I’m up there. I’m proud of my material, but I’m most proud of the way I am able to make people feel. I often have people stop me after shows to tell me they enjoyed my set, and even share a personal story of their own that relates to something I said on stage. To me, that connection is the most important part of my work.
What makes you happy?
I’m a pretty happy girl to begin with, I think that’s an active choice I make every day. But if I had to narrow it down to just a few things, I’d say comedy, classic rock, and quality time with my friends make me the most happy. I try to fill my days with as much of these things as I can. My cup runneth over or whatever!
