Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Lanier.
Hi Ana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
10 years ago, my husband gave me a camera for Christmas after I mentioned on a trip to Paris that I wished I had a better one. What started as simple curiosity quickly turned into a real passion. I took classes to learn how to shoot in manual mode, started studying portrait photography, and realized I had found something I truly loved.
As I grew as a photographer, I discovered maternity photography and instantly connected with it. There’s something so special about capturing women during such an important and transformative time in their lives. Pregnancy goes by so quickly, and I wanted to create images that felt beautiful, timeless, and elevated.
Today, I own Ana Lanier Portrait Studio in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where I specialize in maternity and women’s portrait photography. My style is heavily inspired by fashion editorials, classic beauty, and modern femininity. I’ve built my business around creating a full-service experience—from wardrobe access and professional hair and makeup to guided posing and finished artwork clients can cherish for years.
What started with one camera has turned into a career that allows me to combine creativity with connection. I’m so grateful I get to help women celebrate themselves and preserve some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a perfectly smooth road. Like most small business owners, one of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance the creative side with the business side. Taking photos is what I love, but running a business also means learning marketing, customer service, finances, and wearing a lot of different hats.
Another big challenge was learning to trust myself and recognize the value of my work. In the beginning, it’s easy to compare yourself to others or feel like you have to do what everyone else is doing. Over time, I realized the best thing you can do is lean into what makes you different.
There have also been the normal ups and downs that come with owning a business—slow seasons, changing trends, and moments where you question yourself. But honestly, those seasons taught me the most and helped me grow.
Looking back, every challenge played a part in getting me where I am now. It made me more confident, more resilient, and even more grateful that I get to do something I truly love.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in maternity and women’s portrait photography, creating images that feel elevated, timeless, and fashion-inspired.
What I’m most proud of is building a business that offers more than just photos. I’ve created a full-service experience where women can come in, relax, and feel taken care of from start to finish. I want the entire process to feel easy, fun, and confidence-boosting.
I’m especially known for my maternity work, along with my extensive client closet filled with gowns, fabrics, hats, gloves, jewelry, and accessories that help bring each session to life. Clients love not having to stress about what to wear, and I love helping style each shoot so it feels unique to them.
What sets me apart is how guided and personalized the experience is. I help with posing every step of the way, so no one has to wonder what to do in front of the camera. I combine that with a polished, editorial style to create images that feel beautiful, modern, and timeless.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest advice is to stay open to learning from different people. A mentor doesn’t always have to be one official person—it can be several people whose work, mindset, or business approach you admire. Some of the best lessons I’ve learned came from workshops, online education, and simply paying attention to people who were doing things well.
Most importantly, don’t be intimidated. Everyone starts somewhere, and many successful people are happy to share advice when they see someone who is sincere and willing to learn.
