Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Dyck.
Hi Kim, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into piercing began four years ago, after spending a decade working as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. While I’m grateful for my time in medicine, I found myself feeling increasingly burned out by the realities of a broken healthcare system. I knew I still wanted a career centered around people—something hands-on, meaningful, and rooted in connection—but I was ready for a different path.
That opportunity came through my friendship with Cameron and Stephanie Jones, owners of Old Souls Ink. When they asked if I had ever considered becoming a piercer, it immediately sparked something in me. I had always been fascinated by the industry, and with my daughter apprenticing in tattooing at the time, it felt like a natural and exciting leap.
I dove in headfirst. My initial apprenticeship was brief and, at times, lacked the passion I was searching for—but it never slowed me down. I became a student of the craft in every way I could: studying experienced piercers online, reading, watching, and practicing relentlessly. I committed myself fully to learning, growing, and showing up every day determined to improve.
My medical background has been an invaluable foundation throughout this journey, shaping the way I approach safety, anatomy, and client care. Of course, the path hasn’t been without challenges. There have been mistakes, lessons, and moments of doubt—but each one has helped refine my skills and strengthen my confidence.
I am deeply grateful for my clients, who have trusted me, supported me, and grown alongside me. Their trust has allowed me to evolve not only as a piercer, but as a person. Today, my passion for this industry is stronger than ever, and I remain committed to continuing my education, honing my craft, and providing a safe, empowering experience for every person who sits in my chair.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—and I think that’s true for anyone who’s serious about their craft. Starting out, one of the biggest challenges was navigating an apprenticeship that didn’t provide the depth or passion I was craving. I had to take a lot of ownership over my own education, which meant seeking out knowledge on my own, asking questions, and sometimes learning things the hard way.
Coming from a medical background, stepping into an industry that is largely unregulated in comparison was also an adjustment. I had to learn how to blend my clinical standards with an artistic environment, while still maintaining a high level of safety and professionalism.
There were also the internal struggles—self-doubt and the pressure to prove to myself (and others) that I belonged in this industry. Piercing is a skill that takes time, precision, and confidence, and those aren’t things you master overnight.
Of course, like any hands-on profession, there have been mistakes along the way. But I’ve always approached those moments with accountability and a commitment to learn and improve. Every challenge has ultimately made me a better piercer and a more mindful practitioner.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change the struggles. They forced me to grow, to become more intentional in my work, and to build the level of care and dedication that I bring to my clients today.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the heart of what I do, I’m not just providing a service—I’m creating an experience. My background in nursing really shaped my approach to client care, and I carry that “bedside manner” into every appointment. I want each person who sits in my chair to feel comfortable, heard, and genuinely taken care of from start to finish. Customer service is incredibly important to me, and I hold myself to a high standard when it comes to both safety and the overall experience I provide.
While I offer a wide range of piercings, I’ve found that I’m especially drawn to more intimate, confidence-building work. Nipple piercings, in particular, have become my favorite. There’s something incredibly powerful about being part of a moment where someone reconnects with their body in a positive way. Seeing that shift in confidence and empowerment in my clients is something I’m deeply proud of.
I’m also known for creating a space that feels personal and a little bit magical. I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter, and my workspace reflects that—filled with memorabilia that clients love to explore and connect over. It’s a great conversation starter and helps people relax, especially if they’re feeling nervous.
Recently, I’ve expanded my services to include permanent jewelry, which has been an exciting way to reach new clients and offer something a little different. It’s allowed me to continue growing creatively while still staying rooted in the connection and experience that I value so much.
What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve built with my clients. I don’t take it lightly that people choose me for something that can be both vulnerable and meaningful. I believe what sets me apart is the balance I bring—combining medical knowledge, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for making people feel confident, safe, and seen.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really believe in luck—I believe things tend to fall into place the way they’re meant to. When I look at my life and my business, the most meaningful moments have come from timing, relationships, and staying open to opportunities.
One of the biggest examples of that is getting to work alongside my daughter at Old Souls Ink. Watching her grow into such a phenomenal artist has been incredibly special. On top of that, her best friend—who had taken a break from tattooing—found her way back to the industry and is now working with us as well.
We’ve built more than just a workplace; it truly feels like an extended family. I get to spend my days working with my best friends, my daughter, and my “adopted” daughter, and that’s something I don’t take for granted. It makes coming to work every day something I genuinely look forward to.
So no, I don’t see it as luck—I see it as everything coming together the way it was supposed to, and I’m really grateful for that.
