Community Highlights: Meet Brandon Piper of BSP Motorsports

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Piper.

Hi Brandon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Some would say I was born with a wrench in my hand, but my family will tell you it really started when I was about three years old. My first “project” was taking apart my tricycle. I got it apart pretty quickly, but putting it back together was a different story. That curiosity stuck with me though, and for the next 15 years I was constantly taking things apart and learning how they worked, from bicycles to scooters to cars. While I was finishing high school, I joined a work-study program and started changing oil at Valvoline. I didn’t look at it as just a job. I showed up early, stayed late, and took pride in doing things the right way. That mindset led me to becoming the manager of that location before I even graduated.

At a certain point, I realized I wanted more than just routine maintenance work. I wanted to understand cars at a deeper level and push myself, so I enrolled at Wyotech in Sacramento, California. I studied general automotive, chassis fabrication, and high-performance powertrains, and graduated in 2010. After moving back home, I became the lead mechanic at Goodyear Tire and Automotive. That’s also where I met a mentor who introduced me to the world of racing. That experience changed everything. I eventually stepped into a role as a lead mechanic and track support for a Viper race team, traveling the country and working at some of the best tracks. It pushed my skillset, my work ethic, and my attention to detail to a whole new level.

In April of 2013, I took a leap and started BSP Motorsports. In the beginning, it was focused on high-end and exotic cars, but more than anything, it was built around a standard. I wanted to create a place where things were done right, no shortcuts, no guesswork, and no cutting corners.

Within the first 18 months, we outgrew our original space and expanded. That growth came from one thing, referrals. We built trust by taking care of our clients and standing behind our work. To me, BSP has always stood for Best Service Provided, and that is something we work to live up to every single day. Today, the business has grown into a high-end performance shop with a strong team and a clear identity. We focus on detailed, documented, and intentional work. We are not the cheapest option, and we are okay with that. Our goal is to be the most thorough and to deliver a level of quality that speaks for itself.

What started as curiosity and a love for taking things apart has turned into something much bigger. I’m proud of what we’ve built, but I’m even more focused on where we’re going and continuing to raise the standard for our team, our clients, and this industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Over the past 13 years, I’ve built BSP Motorsports from the ground up, and with that has come a constant set of challenges. In the beginning, the biggest pressure was simply proving ourselves. We didn’t have a big name behind us, so everything came down to reputation. At the same time, I was trying to manage cash flow, reinvest into tools and equipment, and do every job in the business myself. It was a lot of long days, a lot of risk, and a lot of learning as I went.

As we started to grow, the challenges changed. One of the hardest parts has been finding and building the right team. In a high-end performance shop, the standard has to be high every time, and not everyone is wired that way. Learning how to hire, lead, and hold people accountable while still building a strong culture has been one of the biggest growth areas for me.

Another ongoing challenge has been learning how to shift from working in the business to leading it. For a long time, I was stuck in the day-to-day, and it’s something I still work on. Stepping back, trusting the team, and focusing on the bigger picture doesn’t come naturally when you care as much as I do about the details. On top of that, the industry itself is always evolving. Technology is changing fast, from advanced diagnostics to electric vehicles, and we’ve had to stay ahead of that while still delivering the level of quality our clients expect.

Through all of it, the weight of leadership is real. Making tough decisions, supporting your team, and continuing to push forward even when things are uncertain. But those challenges are also what shaped both me and the business. They forced me to grow, get more disciplined, and stay committed to the long-term vision. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it.

We’ve been impressed with BSP Motorsports , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BSP Motorsports is a high-end performance and service shop built around one core idea, doing things the right way, every time. From the beginning, our goal was never to be the cheapest option. It was to be the most thorough, the most intentional, and the most accountable. We specialize in performance builds, diagnostics, and detailed service work across a wide range of vehicles, from high-end and exotic cars to well-maintained daily drivers. What we’re really known for is our attention to detail and our process. We don’t guess, we don’t skip steps, and we don’t cut corners.

Every vehicle that comes through our shop is approached with a level of care and precision that most people don’t see behind the scenes. We torque to spec, we paint-mark critical components, and we document our work so our clients can see exactly what was done. That level of transparency builds trust and holds us to a higher standard. What truly sets us apart is our mindset. We believe how you do the small things is how you do everything. Whether it’s sweeping the shop floor or installing an engine, the same level of discipline and attention to detail applies. That culture is something we’ve worked hard to build within our team.

We’re also very clear about who we are not. We are not the fastest, and we are not the cheapest. Our clients come to us because they want it done right and they want it done once. What I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built. The majority of our business comes from referrals, and that only happens when you consistently deliver and stand behind your work. At the end of the day, we’re not just fixing cars, we’re solving problems and building long-term relationships.

When someone brings their vehicle to BSP, they’re not just getting a service, they’re getting a level of care, precision, and accountability that defines who we are as a brand.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is building something meaningful while staying grounded in what matters most. On the business side, I take a lot of pride in growing BSP Motorsports into something that truly stands for quality, integrity, and doing things the right way, not the easy way. There’s a real sense of satisfaction in solving complex problems, delivering work that exceeds expectations, and creating an environment where my team can grow, take ownership, and care about the details.

Outside of the shop, it comes back to my family. Being present with my wife, Chelsea, and our kids is everything. Knowing that the long hours and the sacrifices are building a better future for them gives all of it purpose. At the end of the day, it’s progress that drives me. Staying disciplined, continuing to grow, and seeing the results of consistent effort, both personally and professionally, is what really fulfills me.
