Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Okafor.
Stacy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my acting journey in high school doing local plays and competing in monologue competitions. I completely fell in love with it. I knew it was what I wanted to pursue in college. Once I got to college, I started auditioning for student short films. I got introduced to a whole New World of creativity and completely immersed myself in it. Fast-forward to today I’m now working as a professional actor. I’m signed to two agencies and have done major commercials with brands, such as Clorox, Navy Federal, and Nexguard. As many people know being an actor has peaks and valleys so during slow seasons, I decided to pick up, producing for others and myself. I found that I really have a knack for it. This year alone I have been hired to produce four films and it brings me alot of joy being a connecter in this industry and building the teams that will bring a director’s vision to life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It certainly hasn’t been an easy journey. I have often struggled with finding the balance between making a living while also pursuing my dreams. Sometimes it feels as if you have to sacrifice one for the other. To be honest, I’m still trying to find that balance. I have been blessed recently to be able to book consistent work, but it wasn’t always the case. I took on many projects for free in the earliest stages of my career and did a lot of background work to network and make connections with other creatives. My acting career is my priority. I obsess over it and I truly give it everything that I have. If there is a career worth sacrificing for, it is certainly this one.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional actor in film producer. I specialize in narrative work and I am incredibly proud that I didn’t give up when it was hard, and I was doubtful and uncertain if I would succeed. The trait that sets me apart is my resilience and my inability to fold. This career path requires you to be relentless as many actors are faced with countless rejections on a daily basis. I am grateful that I have that trait.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
There is a book that I always reference called Audition by Michael Shurtleff. It is my acting bible so to speak. It was an intergral part of my development as an actor and providing the tools that helped me improve at auditioning for roles. I highly recommend that every actor reads it.
