Community Highlights: Meet Danisha Nunn of Exceptionally You Wellness, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danisha Nunn.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in psychology, and before becoming a doula, I worked in social services. I spent years in disability services and working with families involved in CPS, where I provided case management and goal-oriented therapy.

I am also a mother of three. One of my children has high medical and emotional needs, including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. As I began navigating the balance of being a single mother and managing those needs, I realized I had to find work that I was passionate about but that also offered a better work-life balance.

While this was happening, I was going through my own healing journey. I started using holistic practices like Reiki and holistic womb healing. I began acknowledging and healing through my own birth traumas and decided I wanted to be the support and advocate that I felt I needed during my own pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Birth work was a natural fit that already aligned with my experience in social services. I am passionate about helping people feel empowered and finding their own voice. Over the last 10 years, I’ve noticed that helping others navigate systems, trauma, and life challenges is a gift of mine.

That is how Exceptionally You Wellness was created. As I am on my own mission to be my authentic self, I want the same for others. The mission is to provide holistic support and advocacy, helping people find their voice and feel empowered throughout their perinatal journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been the smoothest road, but I wouldnt say the bumpiest either. There have been a lot of steps to get to where I am now, like choosing the right certification programs and navigating how to actually get hands on experience.

One of the biggest parts of the journey has been learning how to be confident and stand in my own personal power. This is something I am still working on because I know I have to be confident in myself so others can be confident in me. I’ve met some amazing women along the way who have been supportive and helped me learn how to network, put myself out there, and come out of my shell.

I also had to learn the practical business side of how to set up a legal company. It has been a major learning curve and it is still a work in progress. While I lean heavily on my prior professional experience to do the actual work of being a doula, I am still learning every day. I am constantly navigating how to work within medical systems, how to be part of a birth team when you aren’t always wanted, and how to support moms while staying within my scope. Most importantly, I am learning how to provide my own self care so I do not reach burnout.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I provide full spectrum doula services throughout the DFW metroplex, covering everything from fertility and pregnancy to birth and postpartum. I specialize in working with high risk pregnancies and supporting the neurodivergent, special needs, LGBTQ+, and poly communities. I support every individual’s authentic vision, whether that is a home birth, birth center, or hospital birth. While much of my experience has been with planned inductions and planned C-sections, I am comfortable in any setting.

What sets me apart is my unique ability to bridge two different worlds. Because of my master’s degree in psychology and my years in social services, I have a deep understanding of how to navigate complex systems while providing emotional and goal oriented support. I don’t just provide physical comfort; I bring a seasoned perspective to advocacy, helping my clients process their experiences and find their voice in spaces where they might otherwise feel unheard.

Brand wise, I am most proud of my balanced and adaptable approach. I blend holistic practices like Reiki and womb healing with a practical understanding of the medical model. I know that sometimes we have to work within hospital systems, so I stay flexible to ensure families can have an authentic experience even when plans change. My goal is to be the steady advocate I once needed for myself.

I also offer childbirth education, Bengkung belly binding, and placenta encapsulation services. I want people to know that my brand is built on the idea that you deserve to be supported exactly as you are. Whether you are navigating a high risk pregnancy or simply want an empowered experience, I am here to help you feel empowered and authentic throughout your perinatal journey.
