Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Santa Maria.
Hi Mark, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Mark Santa Maria, and I’ve been involved in RC cars for over 20 years, with more than 15 years competing at a professional level. Before becoming a full-time content creator, my career was in software programming, where I spent a significant amount of time presenting to customers and leading teams.
I originally started recording my RC adventures as a way to improve my public speaking. Speaking in front of a camera has a way of exposing every weakness, and as I moved into leadership roles, sharpening that skill became important to me. What started as practice quickly turned into something more. As I began sharing my RC experiences on YouTube, I realized there was a place for my style of content. It wasn’t just about reviewing RC cars. It was about building a community, showcasing RC racing, and bridging the gap between the different disciplines within the hobby.
When COVID hit, YouTube experienced massive growth, and my channels took off alongside it. That momentum opened the door for me to pursue content creation full time. As the channel grew, it quickly outpaced what I could manage from home. Between the growing collection of RC cars, incoming products, and the need for a team, it was clear we needed more space.
We moved operations into a small warehouse in North McKinney, which served as both storage for my RC collection and a recording space. The idea was inspired by the TV show Fantasy Factory, where professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek created a warehouse that functioned as a playground for skateboarding. That concept stuck with me. The idea that you could build something incredible purely from passion was exactly what I wanted to bring to RC.
Within just three months, we outgrew that first warehouse and expanded into the largest space in our business park. That’s when Area RC was born, and we opened it to the public.
The name “Area RC” comes from a running theme on my channel where I would refer to my driving locations as “top secret.” Being located in a relatively rural part of McKinney made it a perfect fit, a fun play on Area 51.
Area RC focuses on one core idea: making RC accessible and fun while growing the community. Our niche is Mini-Z racing, which is one of the easiest entry points into competitive RC. These cars are small, fast, and incredibly capable on a track, making them perfect for both beginners and experienced racers.
With the support of our YouTube audience, Area RC has grown into the largest Mini-Z retailer by volume in the United States, and arguably the world. At the shop, visitors can see the massive RC collection featured on the channel, check out unreleased products, and experience RC in a way that’s hard to find anywhere else. We have a dedicated Mini-Z track and a custom indoor crawling course that runs throughout the building above your head.
Area RC is more than just a hobby shop. It’s an experience. It’s a place where people can see where the content is created, connect with the community, and experience RC at its best, all under one roof.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Area RC is a multifunctional facility, which is both one of our greatest strengths and one of our biggest challenges. Our YouTube channels use the space as a recording studio, our online store operates out of it, and at the same time, it serves as a public-facing experience for the RC community.
Because of this, our public hours are limited to specific windows: Wednesday and Friday from 4–8 PM, Saturday from 12–6 PM, and Sunday from 12–4 PM. As our operations have evolved and demand has grown, we’ve quickly outgrown the space. From a business perspective, that’s a great problem to have, but from a customer standpoint, it can create friction. Parking can be limited, pit space fills up quickly, and product availability can fluctuate. It’s not uncommon for customers to arrive early, which sometimes pushes us to adjust how we manage our intended hours of operation.
Another ongoing challenge is my availability onsite. At my core, my role has always been, and will continue to be, a content creator. That requires frequent travel, which means I’m not always at Area RC as much as I would like to be. For visitors coming in for the “MSM YouTube experience,” it can be disappointing when I’m not there in person to welcome them.
That said, we’ve built a strong team that manages day-to-day operations at a high level. We also make it a priority to be transparent about my schedule so visitors know when I’ll be onsite. While it’s not a perfect balance, it allows us to continue growing both the content and the in-person experience in a way that stays true to our vision.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
To the outside world, MSM Entertainment LLC can look like a single creator making YouTube videos and selling RC cars. The reality is much bigger than that.
At our core, we are content creators. Everything starts with YouTube and the passion for sharing the RC hobby. But over time, that foundation has grown into a multi-layered business that touches nearly every part of the RC space.
We operate as an online hobby shop, offering products to customers across the country. We’ve developed our own brand with RC tools, accessories, and apparel designed around real-world use. We’ve built experiences through Area RC, where people can come in, see the content being created, and be part of the hobby in person. We also produce and promote RC events nationwide, creating opportunities for racers and families to get involved at all levels.
In addition, we work closely with some of the largest companies in the RC industry, helping market and showcase their products through authentic, real-world use. Behind the scenes, MSM Entertainment is powered by a dedicated team handling everything from creative direction and product sourcing to shipping, customer support, and video production.
What sets us apart is that everything we do is connected. Content, retail, events, and community all feed into each other. It’s not just about selling products or making videos. It’s about growing the hobby, lowering the barrier to entry, and creating an environment where anyone can enjoy RC, whether they are brand new or have been in it for decades.
What I’m most proud of is that we’ve stayed true to where this all started. No matter how much we’ve grown, the foundation hasn’t changed. It’s still about having fun with RC cars and sharing that experience with others. That authenticity is what built MSM Entertainment, and it’s what continues to drive everything we do today.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
As cliché as it may sound, none of this would be possible without the people who support our YouTube channels, what we call MSM Nation. Their support has opened doors for us to grow, take risks, and share our passion for RC on a much larger scale. Everything we’ve built traces back to that community.
My wife, Melissa Cantu, has played an incredible role in the success of MSM Entertainment. She stepped away from a very successful career as a corporate recruiter and put her own passion, a wellness studio she built, on hold to help grow this business. She truly is the heart of our operations. Her energy and personality shape the experience for both our customers and our team, and a lot of what makes MSM feel the way it does comes directly from her.
My sons also deserve a lot of credit. They’ve chosen to be involved in everything I do in RC. It would be easy to say they’re just having fun, and they are, but their involvement brings a level of balance that’s hard to replicate. Building a business around your passion can lead to burnout if you’re not careful, but having my family involved keeps it grounded and reminds me why I started in the first place.
At the end of the day, MSM Entertainment isn’t built by one person. It’s a combination of community, family, and a team of people who all believe in the same mission: to keep RC fun and continue growing the hobby.
