Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Huynh.
Hi Sara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey behind the lens began in 2016, initially focusing on portrait photography. However, everything changed in 2022 when I discovered the electric energy of live music photography. It started with seeing Movements (@movements) live, but the real spark ignited when their opener, a local Denton band called Jockey (@jockeyisabandfromtexas) took the stage.
On a whim, I caught Jockey again the following week at Rubber Gloves, camera in hand, and I was hooked. Since then, I’ve dived headfirst into capturing the raw emotion and vibrant atmosphere of live shows.
Over the past few years, I’ve honed a distinctive style that I’m truly proud of. Each show is a new opportunity to tell a story through images, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be doing what I love.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Imposter syndrome was definitely my biggest hurdle. I remember feeling so out of place, especially at the beginning. I was shooting with what’s considered a beginner’s camera (and still do), still figuring out my style, and just generally nervous about being a newbie in a crowd. It was a recipe for anxiety.
What I’ve realized is that although imposter syndrome can feel like a never-ending battle at times, when you feel like you don’t belong in the room, the most important thing is that you ARE in the room. You belong, and when you finally accept that, it is a freeing feeling.
The support I got from my friends, family, and other photographers was huge. Their encouragement, combined with just getting more experience under my belt, really helped me build the confidence I have now. It’s a reminder that everyone starts somewhere, and it’s okay to feel a little lost along the way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Dallas-based self-portrait, portrait, and music photographer! I think my signature style — a blend of film-like aesthetics with green, blue, and orange hues, finished with a touch of grit — is what makes my work stand out. I also love experimenting with collage carousels on social media to keep my content fresh and engaging.
One of my proudest achievements was touring across Texas with Mean Motor Scooter (@mean.motor.scooter), Kalypso (@kalypsobandofficial), and Labels (@labelsbandofficial). Being on the road, doing what I love, and connecting with new people was an unforgettable experience.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Sun Valley Scarlet (@sunvalleyscarlet) has been instrumental in my growth as a photographer. Since 2023, they’ve trusted me to capture almost every performance to date, giving me invaluable experience across diverse venues and boosting my confidence.
I’ve also drawn inspiration from fellow DFW photographers like Jolea Bradshaw (@ahippieslullaby) and Abigail Mueller (@amuellerphoto), whose composition and color-grading skills have influenced my own style.
Ultimately, I owe my success to the vibrant DFW music scene, especially the Denton scene. The artists in this community have provided the environment and opportunities for me to learn, grow, and flourish.
