Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakeva Bryant.
Nakeva, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into the entertainment industry began with a dream at just five years old. I always believed I would become a Grammy Award winning artist, but God had other plans. He revealed that to me through songwriting. I wrote a soulful R&B gospel record titled “Tired,” and when people heard it, they immediately said it belonged in a film. That moment opened a door I never expected into an industry I wasn’t familiar with, but one I was clearly chosen for. Soon after, my song was placed in an independent film, and everything changed.
In 2016, with nothing but a dream and a vision, SckyHigh Films was founded. Our first project, Wait for Love, marked the beginning our Independent Filmmaker’s journey. Together with producer Tabitha Hoof, we came across our first challenge and that was we had a completed film, but no platform to release it on. Believing in our heart that God has called us to do this, our faith never strayed. For the Bible says in Proverbs 18:16, A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. 4 months later, that changed when Maverick Entertainment reached out, expressing interest in distributing our film. That moment affirmed that we were on the right path. and we never looked back from there.
In 2018, my mother and I co-wrote Bootleg Church a project that meant everything to us. It was a dream she had long held, and finally, my mother and I had the opportunity to bring it to life together. Just as we were preparing to begin production, COVID-19 brought everything to a halt. While that was difficult, nothing compared to the devastating news I was about to recieve and that was, my mother had been diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer. That moment devastated me. Years earlier, I had lost my brother to stomach cancer, and it felt like my world was breaking all over again.
Despite it all, in 2019, production resumed, and my mother was able to be present on set. In that moment, God fulfilled her dream and I will carry that memory with me forever.
In 2023, just before filming Grimy Situation, my life shifted again. I experienced a mild stroke something that could have stopped me, slowed me down, or filled me with fear. Instead, it awakened me. It reminded me that God is in control and that there is no need to stress over what He has already promised. That experience changed my mindset. I realized that everything I’ve been working toward is already written I just have to walk it out.
That same year, I lost my mother to pancreatic cancer. That loss changed me deeply. My mother wasn’t just my parent she was my inspiration, my strength, and a driving force behind my journey into filmmaking. She believed in me before the world ever saw my potential. Even now, everything I create carries a piece of her. Her spirit lives in my work, my stories, and my determination to keep going.
Through pain, I found purpose. Filmmaking is not just something I do it’s who I am. I live it, breathe it, and pour my heart into every project. From our humble beginnings with Wait for Love, Bootleg Church, and Irreversible Desire, to elevated productions like Grimy Situation, Droppin Bodies, and now Fatal Promises, every step has been rooted in growth, resilience, and faith.
A major part of this journey has been my partnership with Tabitha Hoof producer, business partner, and best friend. From the beginning, she has brought strength, vision, and balance to everything we are building. Together, through SckyHigh Films and Tab-It Productions, we’ve created a partnership grounded in passion, hard work, and a shared belief that we are called to do this. It’s more than business it’s alignment.
We’ve also been blessed to collaborate with incredible creatives like Timothy Bubel and Paul Michael O’Connor of Tame Rabbit Media. Their contributions have helped elevate our production quality and expand our creative vision. Every collaboration has been intentional, bringing us closer to the level we’ve always envisioned.
What makes our journey unique is that we didn’t wait for permission. We didn’t wait for big budgets or major studios to validate us. We built with what we had. We learned. We grew. And we kept going.
Now, with projects like Fatal Promises and upcoming films, we’re not just telling stories—we’re building a legacy. Our goal is to create content that reflects real emotions, real struggles, and real triumphs stories that people can see themselves in.
My journey is proof that setbacks are not the end they are setups for something greater. Losing my mother and facing my own health scare could have stopped me, but instead, it strengthened me. It reminded me that time is precious, purpose is real, and a calling cannot be ignored.
I am walking in what God has already promised me and this is only the beginning.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been easy. This industry will test you in ways you don’t always see coming. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that every step toward greatness and excellence has to be intentional. You can’t just move off passion alone you have to move with wisdom.
As a woman in this industry, I’ve had to navigate spaces where sometimes not everyone has the best intentions. There have been moments where I’ve had to learn the difference between genuine opportunities and situations that could take advantage of my vision, my time, or my work. That meant growing not just as a creative, but as a businesswoman, understanding contracts, protecting our projects, and making decisions that align with long-term success, not just short-term wins.
On the creative side, starting out with limited resources was a challenge. We didn’t have big budgets or major backing, we had vision, determination, and a willingness to learn. Building SckyHigh Films alongside Tab-It Productions meant long nights, sacrifices, and constantly pushing ourselves to elevate the quality of our work with what we had.
But every obstacle has refined me. It taught me how to move smarter, trust my instincts, protect my brand, and stay humble and grounded in my purpose. The journey hasn’t been smooth but it’s been necessary. Every challenge has prepared me for the level I’m stepping into now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a writer, director, and producer, and the founder of SckyHigh Films an independent production company built on purpose, passion, and powerful storytelling. Through SckyHigh Films, in collaboration with Tab-It Productions, we create bold, emotionally driven films rooted in real-life experiences. Our work often explores themes like love, betrayal, trauma, faith, and redemption stories that resonate deeply and leave a lasting impact.
We specialize in bringing authentic stories to life in a way that feels raw, cinematic, and meaningful. I’m very hands-on in the creative process, from writing and developing scripts to directing and producing our films, ensuring that every project is intentional and aligned with our vision.
What we’re known for is our consistency, our growth, and our ability to connect with audiences. From our early projects like Wait for Love, Bootleg Church, and Irreversible Desire, to more elevated productions like Grimy Situation, Droppin Bodies, and our latest film Fatal Promises, we’ve continued to push ourselves creatively and raise the standard with every project.
What I’m most proud of is that we built this from the ground up. We didn’t wait for big opportunities we created them. We stayed committed to learning our craft, improving our process, and building a brand rooted in purpose and resilience. I’m also incredibly proud of the opportunities we’ve been able to create for others giving upcoming talent a platform to showcase their gifts and positioning them for even greater opportunities in the industry.
What sets us apart is our mindset. We don’t follow trends, and we don’t sit around waiting for doors to open. While we’re grateful for every opportunity that comes our way, we believe in creating our own. We move with intention, faith, and discipline understanding that purpose requires both vision and action.
We also take pride in collaboration. Whether we’re working with our core team or partnering with other creatives, we’re committed to bringing visions to life in a way that reflects excellence and authenticity. In addition, we offer services for those who have stories to tell but may not know how to bring them into script form we help transform ideas and life experiences into professionally written screenplays.
At the end of the day, we’re not just making films we’re building a legacy. SckyHigh Films represents growth, ownership, and storytelling that matters, and we’re just getting started.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is to start where you are with what you have and don’t wait for everything to be perfect. When we started, we didn’t have big budgets, major connections, or all the answers. What we did have was vision, faith, and the willingness to keep going. That’s what carried us.
I would also tell anyone starting out to learn both the creative side and the business side. Talent alone isn’t enough you have to understand contracts, protect your work, and be intentional about the decisions you make. Not every opportunity is meant for you, and not everyone will have your best interests at heart. Move with wisdom.
Integrity is everything. How you treat people, how you handle business, and how you represent yourself when no one is watching will define your reputation. In this industry, your name and your word matter protect both.
Consistency is key. Success doesn’t come overnight it comes from showing up, putting in the work, and continuing even when things feel slow or uncertain.
Build relationships, not just connections. The people you grow with, learn from, and collaborate with will be a big part of your journey. And don’t be afraid to create your own opportunities. If the door doesn’t open, build one.
Most importantly, trust God and trust your process. What’s meant for you is already yours you just have to stay disciplined enough to walk it out.
Stay focused. Stay grounded. And don’t quit.
