Daily Inspiration: Meet Maria Guadalupe Botello

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Guadalupe Botello.

Hi Maria Guadalupe, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My passion for cooking has always inspired my family and me to dream of one day owning our own restaurant. I started by selling tamales and catering for parties. Eventually, we had the opportunity to rent a space inside a marketplace called Plaza Latina, where we opened our first location.

We started from nothing. We used our savings, sold our cars, and borrowed money from family to make it happen. At the time, I was pregnant, but I still chose to move forward with this dream. That is how GORDITAS LA MINA began.

With the funds we were able to gather, we built out our space and, after I gave birth to my babies, we officially opened our doors. It was not easy in the beginning, but little by little, we began to grow and build something special. We spent ten years in that marketplace.

Then one morning, everything changed. We received the news that the building was on fire. It is hard to put into words what it feels like to see your life’s work, something you spent ten years building, suddenly gone.

After that loss, we had no choice but to start over. Once again, we used our savings to rebuild, this time in the Lake Highlands community.

Today, thank God, we have been here for a year. We are continuing to work hard, rebuild, and move forward, one step at a time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At first, language was an obstacle when trying to obtain the permits for the restaurant, as was securing sufficient funds to invest—not to mention the lack of time, given that we are a large family consisting of my husband and four children who, at the time, were young and required care and attention.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Carlos Sanchez, my husband, has always been by my side during this time.
