Community Highlights: Meet Patty Rodgers of Denton County Guitar Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patty Rodgers.

Hi Patty, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a fine art painter so to make a living I started out as an art teacher, certified to teach in the public schools in CT then in IL. Having not been very good with managing a large classroom of kids, I signed up to teach guitar at the studio of a private piano and voice teacher in Illinois. In 2005 I began teaching at my own home studio. When we moved to Texas in 2018, I changed the name of my business to Denton County Guitar Studio, made some brochures, then walked around my neighborhood to advertise my services. There were about 2000 homes in that community so before long I had enough students. This past Fall I moved to Hickory Creek and my business is getting up and running.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most of the challenges in this kind of work are dealing with so many personalities, learning styles, and motivations. Sometimes parents want their children to learn an instrument, but the student isn’t willing to practice. Sometimes students have disabilities and I struggle to get them to learn in various ways. With adults, they realize it takes time and work after a hard day already and can’t find time to work at it. These challenges keep me playing and thinking about music theory. My students have their own tastes in music so I’m often teaching them music I wouldn’t normally be interested in. That’s a good thing.
It’s great fun though when I get someone who loves the guitar and they practice and we play together at their lesson.

We’ve been impressed with Denton County Guitar Studio, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in one-on-one instruction in playing guitar. I teach youth and adults to read music, understand music theory, play chords, strum, and improvise. If I have enough students interested in performing, I will find a place near my new location to do that as a Fall or winter concert.

As a performer myself, I can offer the service of playing classical music at a wedding ceremony or cocktail hour, at a luncheon, shower, or other event.

How do you define success?
I think success means being the best you can be. There is always going to be someone better than you but that can’t hold you back from offering your skills to others.
