Conversations with the Inspiring Marissa Covarrubias

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Covarrubias.

Marissa, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started creating art at 6 years old. That’s when I realized art was a true passion. I was very different than my fellow peers. I considered myself goth and still do. I fell in love with the horror and creepy genre at a young age keeping that interest to this day. When I would hunt for creations similar to my interest, I wouldn’t come across a lot. I combined my artistic passion and my love for gothic beauty and horror. This started my business of Asylum Kreations providing unique creepy horror related home decor, accessories and goodies. I wanted to give those who shared my interest a chance to expand their love for these things and not be afraid to show it off.

Has it been a smooth road?
This crazy passionate road has had a few cracked bumps. I had no idea how to start off, how to be anywhere near successful. All I knew is that I wanted to create unique art and share it with others around the world. Opening up a shop was frightening at first having questions of “would anyone really buy my work,” “does my work have potential,” “am I doing all this wrong?” All these thoughts came in and continuous past thoughts from people telling me I cannot make it with any kind of art. Once I let myself be my worst critic, I pushed it all aside and went forth even with minimal money. It’s only been recently that my shop has kicked off. It is not impossible to create your dream. The advice I have is to never stop. When someone tells you that you can’t, use it to gain power and strength. I have become a more powerful unique woman creating art in a man’s art world, and that gives me more confidence than I ever thought I could have. If you have a unique style or interest, don’t be afraid to show it with your passion. That alone is a beautiful creation.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Asylum Kreations story. Tell us more about the business.
Currently, my work consists of creating unique creepy horror goodies for fellow weirdos like myself. Although, I am an artist of all trades. I have an Associate’s degree in fine arts, I’m a published photographer, I was an alternative model, SFX makeup artist, and a graphic designer. I use all these gifts towards my shop and helping it become more successful. That’s what truly makes me proud, that I found a way to combine every art media I have trained in towards my shop. I don’t focus on one media, I need more than that. I designed my own logo and flyers, I drew my own stickers and design my products artistically. I have this different touch to my work that I feel hasn’t truly been done before. To push those weird limits, and make something professional out of it is not commonly done.

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I feel the biggest barriers for females in the art or crafty world is truly being taken seriously. No matter the style, strength or ability, to be taken seriously is hard to come by. Each female is different and that’s beautiful… each woman being different means we have a lot to offer. I feel some people tend to see women being similar to each other, having the same to offer and don’t wish to pursue the work offered. I have gone through this by being different, I am compared to other women as being an image of a woman on what society sees. I’m very different than in the eyes of society and should not be compared to others. We are all different, have different abilities, talent and minds. Having these gifts gives us multiple things to offer instead of just one way.
