Hi Michaela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in the Czech Republic and moved to the United States in my early twenties with little more than a suitcase, a lot of determination and a willingness to figure things out as I went. Like many people starting over in a new country, I spent years building a life from the ground up and navigating a path that looked very different from the one I had originally imagined for myself.
Dallas became home in the process. It’s where I found my community, built meaningful relationships and eventually discovered that creativity wasn’t just something I loved — it was something I wanted to build a career around. The city has played a huge role in shaping who I am today. Dallas has an incredible entrepreneurial spirit and being surrounded by people who are willing to take risks and pursue big ideas gave me the confidence to do the same.
Before starting Studio Michaela Smith, I spent several years working in the corporate and e-commerce/lifestyle world as a photographer. While I gained valuable experience and developed my technical skills, I eventually found myself feeling disconnected from the kind of work I truly wanted to create. In 2025, I made one of the scariest decisions of my life : I left a stable full-time job without having a backup plan.
From the outside, it probably didn’t look like the most logical decision. But deep down, I knew I wanted more freedom, more creativity and more opportunities to build genuine connections with people. I wanted to create work that felt meaningful — not just produce images, but tell stories.
Since then, I’ve built Studio Michaela Smith, my own creative studio where I combine photography, video production, graphic design and visual storytelling to help both individuals and brands bring their ideas to life. My work ranges from capturing meaningful personal milestones and portraits to creating marketing campaigns, social media content and brand visuals for businesses looking to connect with their audience in an authentic way.
What I love most about this career is the freedom it gives me to create, think strategically and approach every project from a different angle. No two days look the same and that’s exactly what keeps me inspired. One day I might be developing a content strategy for a growing brand, the next directing a campaign shoot, creating short-form video content, designing marketing assets or helping someone build visuals that better represent who they are and what they do.
What makes it all so meaningful, though, is the people behind the projects. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside entrepreneurs, founders, creatives and individuals who are passionate about what they’re building. Getting a front-row seat to their stories, ideas and ambitions is something I never take for granted. Those relationships are one of the biggest reasons I love what I do. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my work can help someone feel more confident in their brand, share their story more effectively or take the next step toward a goal they’ve been working toward for years.
Looking back, there were many moments where I wasn’t sure everything would work out. But I’ve learned that some of the best things in life happen when you’re willing to trust yourself before you have all the answers. Today, I get to wake up every day doing work I genuinely love, collaborating with incredible people and building a business that feels aligned with who I am. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. While I’m incredibly grateful for where I am today, the road here has been filled with challenges, uncertainty and a lot of moments where I had to trust myself before I had proof that things would work out.
One of the biggest challenges was starting over in a completely new country. When I moved to the United States from the Czech Republic, I was leaving behind everything familiar — my family, friends, language and support system. Building a life from scratch teaches you resilience very quickly, but it also comes with a lot of self-doubt and growing pains.
Professionally, one of the hardest decisions I made was leaving a stable corporate career to pursue my own business. There wasn’t a perfect plan waiting for me on the other side. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve experienced periods where opportunities felt endless and other times where I questioned whether I was making the right decision at all. Learning to navigate uncertainty has probably been one of my greatest lessons.
I’ve also learned that entrepreneurship is about much more than creativity. You have to become comfortable with rejection, wear multiple hats, advocate for yourself and continue showing up even when things don’t go as planned.
On a personal level, losing one of my closest friends unexpectedly changed my perspective on life in a profound way. It reminded me that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and that the things we’re most afraid of pursuing are often the things we should pay attention to. That experience gave me the courage to stop waiting for the “perfect time” and start building a life that felt meaningful and aligned with who I am.
Looking back, the challenges were never the parts I would have chosen, but they shaped me into a stronger business owner, a more resilient person and someone who isn’t afraid to take risks in pursuit of a life that feels authentic, meaningful and truly my own.

What I’m most proud of isn’t any one project or achievement. It’s the fact that I built a business and career that genuinely reflects who I am. Leaving the security of a corporate role to pursue my own path was one of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken and seeing that leap turn into a thriving creative business has been incredibly rewarding.
I also take a lot of pride in the relationships I’ve built along the way. Some of my favorite moments have come from collaborating with passionate business owners, fellow creatives and individuals who trust me to help bring their vision to life. Being invited into those stories and playing a small role in helping someone build something they’re excited about is something I never take for granted.
I think what sets me apart is that I don’t see creativity and strategy as separate things. The strongest work happens when the two come together. Beautiful visuals can capture attention, but thoughtful storytelling creates connection — and that’s where I believe the real magic happens.
How do you think about happiness?
These days, happiness looks a lot simpler than I once thought it would.
It’s having the freedom to build a life that feels aligned with who I am. It’s spending my days creating, meeting inspiring people and working on projects that genuinely excite me. It’s the feeling of finishing a shoot, delivering a project I’m proud of or helping someone see their story and their business in a new light.
Outside of work, happiness often looks like the little things: a morning run with my dog Awoo, sunshine, discovering a new coffee shop, traveling somewhere unfamiliar, spending time with people I care about or simply being present enough to appreciate an ordinary day.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that happiness isn’t something waiting at the next milestone. It’s found in the everyday moments we often overlook while chasing bigger goals.
Having experienced both significant change and loss, I’ve become much more intentional about appreciating the life I’m living right now. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given, the people I’ve met along the way and the ability to wake up each day doing work that feels meaningful.
At the end of the day, what makes me happiest is connection — to people, to creativity, to new experiences and to the feeling that I’m building a life that’s truly my own.
