Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Nixon.
Katie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always known that photography was what I wanted to do, but finessing the details along the way really has been a fun journey!
While getting my B.F.A in Photography and Painting from UTA, I explored how to translate my conceptual ideas into photography, often exploring ideas around how we interact in the domestic space and with the public spaces around us. I’ve always been interested in using photography to explore concepts about my own identity within these spaces. Even now the conceptual aspect of anything always plays a role in my commercial work.
After college I worked full time in a health food store, which was great because I wanted to learn more about using whole foods and nutrition for optimum health, another strong interest of mine being preventative self health-care. Being able to work as a freelancer now is kind of astounding to me actually because I remember a time when that was all I wanted, to have that time freedom.
While working at that health food store I started a portrait business offering fashion style portraits for regular, everyday women. I loved showing women that they could love themselves in a photograph. While I enjoyed doing that for a time, I knew I wanted to transition into commercial work and I was drawn back to my love of spaces and my love of the home.
Currently, I specialize in interiors and product photography in the Dallas Fort-Worth area, and I’m so lucky I get to work with such talented clients. I absolutely love bringing ideas to live through photography.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has actually been quite a smooth transition for me into the freelance world, I’ve met some of the most generous people in my life in this industry! I’ve realized I thrive on the uncertainty aspect of working in this way and having worked full time before, I knew that I wanted to take the leap of faith into self-employment and it’s been an exciting journey.
My main challenges come in learning how to take it easy and enjoy the unfolding of the process. I don’t think you can work as a freelancer without at least little bit of faith, right?
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Katie Nixon Photography – what should we know?
I am based in Dallas Fort-Worth (although I love to travel) and I specialize in interiors, lifestyle, and commercial photography. I love bringing spaces and things to life. In my work, I’m always striving for a balance between communicating a message but also leaving enough room for interpretation that the image continues to be interesting.
Ultimately, when working with clients, bringing their vision to life is the most important thing.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Besides getting to meet and work with so many different and lovely people in this business, without whom, I wouldn’t be where I am, all I can say is I try to maintain a certain level of optimism that things are always working out.
