Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Randall.
Hi Margaret, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve never been someone who handled working for other people well. I (literally) cannot tell you the amount of times I quit a job simply because I didn’t want to be there; I felt a feeling of being in quicksand the second I would clock in and patiently count down the 8 hours until I was home free. In my home, there was an expectation that you were going to drain yourself for Uncle Sam with a smile on your face because that’s what my parents, who were much older than my peers’ parents, did.
This entire mindset came to a halt in January 2023, when my mom passed away all of a sudden at her job. It was in this moment, at seventeen years old, I knew I would be damned if that was going to be my life. Against my family’s wishes, I applied for esthetician school in 2019 and started putting one foot in front of the other towards my goal of being the best esthetician in my area.
I started small, like embarrassingly small… we’re talking all I had was $200ish dollars to my name and a dream. I went to Hobby Lobby to find decor, found a discounted massage bed on eBay, and some discounted towels and started my dream. It was cute (ugly AF let’s be real), but it was mine. I worked the hours no one else was working to stay ahead of the competition and eventually grew to have my own space (that didn’t work out well either but I made it)!
I learned throughout this journey that no one is going to advocate for my own best interests like me, so speak up often–loud and proud. My business, Glow Forth Aesthetics and Wellness, started off as a dream to simply prove to myself that I was worth building something greater than myself; I’m happy to say that 5 years later, 2 children later, and expanding every quarter… I proved to little Margaret that is capable of everything she promised herself she would do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggle is my blood type, so yes, anything worth having is going to come with struggle.
Once I moved away from home-based services, I was renting a room in a nail salon. The room was just big enough for me, my treatment bed, a shelf and a client. You can guess I outgrew this area pretty quickly plus the owner and I didn’t see eye-to-eye on client expectations and cleanliness. It just wasn’t my forever.
Did I mention that I got pregnant 3 months into starting Glow Forth? Right. Just building and now have to make plans for a baby.
I moved almost a year postpartum, and found my own place! One year into the new place… guess what happens? Boom, pregnant with my second child.
Right after my second child, postpartum got the best of me and I ended the business… for 3 months because I have no village to help with my kids and I was drowning in defeat.
After 3 months, I restarted and never looked back. Struggles still come but I’m learning to enjoy the “good” that comes afterwards
