Today we’d like to introduce you to Lex & Answer.
Hi Lex &, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
We’re Lex & Answer, a DJ duo based in Dallas, Texas, with roots in Zimbabwe. Our journey started with a shared love for music and a fascination with how it brings people together, regardless of where they come from. Growing up surrounded by different sounds, cultures, and musical traditions inspired us to explore and blend genres such as Afro House, Afro Tech, Amapiano, Afrobeats, R&B, and Pop into a sound that reflects both our heritage and our experiences.
One memory that really stands out is from our early days DJing. We would spend countless hours digging for music, testing mixes, and learning what made people connect with a song. We remember playing a set where people from completely different backgrounds started singing, dancing, and celebrating together. In that moment, we realized that music could be more than entertainment—it could be a bridge between cultures. That experience helped shape our vision for what Lex & Answer could become.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not—it’s never a smooth road when you’re trying to build something that people don’t fully understand yet.
When we started, Afro House and Amapiano weren’t nearly as mainstream as they are today, especially in the U.S. A lot of the challenge was simply getting people to believe in the sound. We were constantly introducing audiences, promoters, and venues to genres they weren’t familiar with and showing them that African music could fill dance floors and create unforgettable experiences.
There were times when we’d have to work twice as hard to earn opportunities because people naturally gravitated toward sounds they already knew. We had to be patient, stay consistent, and trust our vision. One of the biggest struggles was finding partners, promoters, and supporters who shared that vision and were willing to grow with us rather than just follow existing trends.
Fortunately, we encountered people along the way who believed in what we were building. They gave us opportunities to showcase Afro House and Amapiano to new audiences, and little by little we started seeing the culture grow. Watching crowds connect with the music—sometimes hearing these sounds for the first time and then asking for more—was incredibly rewarding.
Looking back, those challenges were actually a blessing. They taught us resilience, patience, and the importance of staying authentic. Today, seeing Afro House and Amapiano receive global recognition and become part of mainstream conversations makes all the hard work worth it. We’re proud to have played a small role in helping push that movement forward while staying true to our roots and our mission of connecting people through music
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Since then, our passion has taken us far beyond where we imagined. We’ve had the opportunity to perform across the U.S. and internationally, including Japan, Dubai, Portugal, London, Toronto, South Africa, and beyond. Along the way, we’ve shared stages with artists we’ve admired for years, including Uncle Waffles, Major League DJz, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small Daliwonga, Focalistic, Young Stunna, JazziQ, Musa Keys, DJ Moma, DBN Gogo, TXC. Two Bunnies DJ Shimza, Oscar Mbo, DJ Tira. Mafikozolo, Jah Prayzah and Prince Kaybee, and performed at major events such as Afro Nation Detroit, Zimfest London, and Afrotunes Festival Dallas.
What sets us apart is that we’ve never just played the music—we’ve been part of growing the movement.
When we started championing Afro House and Amapiano, these genres weren’t as widely known in many of the markets where we were performing. While others were following established trends, we were committed to introducing audiences to new sounds and creating spaces where African music could thrive. That required patience, consistency, and a genuine belief in the culture.
Another thing that makes us different is our background and perspective. Being Zimbabwean-born and based in Dallas has allowed us to blend African musical heritage with global influences, creating sets that connect with both people who grew up with these sounds and those hearing them for the first time. Our goal has always been to bridge cultures through music rather than stay within one lane.
We also pride ourselves on our ability to read a crowd and create an experience rather than simply play songs. Every set is a journey. Whether we’re performing at an intimate venue, a major festival, or alongside some of the biggest names in the genre, we focus on creating moments that people remember long after the event is over.
Finally, we think what truly sets us apart is authenticity. We’ve remained committed to our vision from day one—celebrating African music, pushing boundaries, and bringing people together. The recognition we’ve received, including two AFRIMMA nominations for Best African DJ USA, is appreciated, but what means the most to us is seeing how these sounds have grown and knowing we’ve contributed to that journey
Today, our mission remains the same: to bring people together through music. Whether we’re performing for thousands at a festival or creating an intimate experience in a club, we strive to create unforgettable moments that celebrate African musical heritage while embracing global influences.
Looking ahead, our goal is to continue pushing African music onto even bigger global stages, expand our reach to new audiences and markets, create original productions that leave a lasting impact, and help build opportunities for the next generation of African talent. We want Lex & Answer to be more than just a DJ duo—we want to be cultural ambassadors who use music to connect people, inspire communities, and show the world the power and beauty of African sound.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We believe luck definitely plays a role in success, but we’ve always believed that luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.
Throughout our journey, there have been moments that people might call “lucky”—getting booked for a major event, meeting the right promoter, sharing a stage with artists we admired, or finding ourselves in front of a new audience. But those opportunities only mattered because we had spent years preparing for them.
Behind every big moment were countless hours spent perfecting our craft, building our music library, studying crowds, networking, and consistently showing up even when the audiences were small. When an opportunity came, we were ready for it.
On the other hand, we’ve also experienced what some might call bad luck. There were events that didn’t go as planned, opportunities that fell through, and times when people didn’t immediately embrace Afro House and Amapiano. But instead of seeing those moments as setbacks, we treated them as lessons that helped us grow and become more resilient.
Looking back, the biggest lesson we’ve learned is that you can’t control luck, but you can control your preparation, your work ethic, and your attitude. If you stay consistent and keep improving, eventually opportunities find their way to you—and when they do, you’re ready to make the most of them.
So for us, luck has certainly played a role, but preparation, perseverance, and believing in our vision have been the real driving forces behind our journey.
