Today we’d like to introduce you to Penny Sadler.
Hi Penny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Most things in my life happen because I just do what I like doing–what feels most natural.. I was interested in the metaphysical world since I was a teen in the 70s. When I was with friends we did all the things: Ouiji Boards and aura readings. I used to sit in the dark trying to see my aura in the mirror. It was about this time that a teacher I had become friends with introduced me to astrology. It made a real impact and became a lifelong pursuit.
I was also interested in tarot cards and had frequent readings to test the cards. But I didn’t start offering tarot and astrology readings outside my circle of friends until I was in my 30s. I was always taking classes, especially astrology classes, with some of the best teachers of the day…many are still very busy astrologers. It was a great time when Vedic astrology was just beginning to take off in the West. I attended several conferences with people like Joni Patry, David Flaherty, Dennis Harness, and the late Chakrapani. I taught tarot, too. Throughout my life these practices have always been a foundation for me but I didn’t talk about it much. Now, it’s time. I’ve watched astrology go from being very maligned to mainstream. It’s pretty wild.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think I alluded to the idea that in the 70s astrology was a much maligned craft and science. I live in Dallas, and if I can paint a picture, Texas is part of the so-called “Bible Belt.” I was making a living as a hairdresser and makeup artist and I just didn’t bring it up. If you didn’t know me you wouldn’t know that I was interested in spirituality or metaphysics…at least not in those days. Even today, many people have no idea.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m not sure how to answer the what do you do question. I have always worn a lot of hats and still do. If you ask people in my hometown, Dallas, I’m most known as a professional stylist and makeup artist. Over that past ten years or so I’ve also become known as a freelance writer specializing in travel, hospitality, culture, food and drink. Then, there’s my intuitive readings business which includes tarot readings, tea leaf readings, astrology readings, or a mix of all of them. I do private one-on-one readings, as well as group events. More recently, people are seeking me out to get astrocartography readings–in other words, location astrology. As a travel writer it’s a natural fit. I have been personally involved in researching this for over thirty years now. I think it’s a great way to help people who intuitively feel they might be happier someplace else or at least making some kind of change in their living situation. My motivation is to help people and I’ve always been in some kind of career where I’m doing that, one way or another. I’m inherently a good listener which came in handy in salon work and obviously it’s doing intuitive readings. As I listen, I often get intuitive impressions. Sometimes people come to readings and think I’m just going to read their mind, but it doesn’t work like that–things flow better if you are part of the process.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I follow several astrologers online including my current teacher Gary O’Toole. I also like this channel called @Discoveringyouniverse. As for books, you should see my library! I have many older books that are not easy to find these days, as well as decks of cards. Many people give me card decks as gifts. I employ two decks for most readings and use some astrology basics, even for tarot readings and tea leaf readings. I like to experiment and try new things. For example, with tea leaf readings I try different teas and cups. I’m a curious person so I like learning and keeping things fresh. By the way, I don’t need to be with you in person to read your cards or your astrology chart.
