Daily Inspiration: Meet Joseph Mayberry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Mayberry.

Hi Joseph , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had a neurological accident in 2010. It left me temporarily paralyzed. After a successful surgery, I progressed from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane. While in recovery I wanted to travel and watch my son play basketball. I started using a mobility scooter and realized the value of assisted mobility.
I was in Oklahoma City visiting a friend of mine that had a barge shop in the Bricktown area and we witnessed several people have accidents on the Lime and Byrd two wheel stand up scooters.
I was thinking of ways to help and came up with the name SCOOBUUR!
I decided to start a mobility scooter company in Bricktown to give tourist an option that would allow them to sit as they ride.
The day all of the scooters were delivered and I was ready to start renting the scooters out of my friends barber shop; he got evicted. A company came in and bought the building and wanted everyone out.
As a pivot move, I brought the majority of my 5 scooter fleet to Dallas and began renting in the metroplex. This area rapidly grew! We went from 5 scooters total to 10 in the first couple of months. Then we had to add 10 more almost every 3 or 4 months.
After request from online submissions and a partnership with a company called Cloud of Goods; we opened an additional SCOOBUUR branch in Tulsa Ok.
Gratefully we now help people in the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex, Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
In our Dallas hub we offer rentals, sales and repairs.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The greatest struggle was getting started. Since we’ve been in business the greatest struggle has been keeping up with the demand of rental request.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Special Education teacher and a High school boys basketball coach. This is actually my 20th year in Lancaster ISD.
Due to my personal testimony and accident; I’ve been able to encourage and motivate not only my special education students but also the student athletes I coach. Since we’ve been in Lancaster, we’ve won 4 State Championships and counting. As a head freshman coach I’ve finally experienced 2 undefeated seasons and counting.
I was featured on a local news channel from me recovering from my injury and coming back to coaching and helping motivate our guys to the schools first ever State Championship in 2015, then winning it again in 2016.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I honestly get the most joy out of life from helping others. I love the feeling of seeing a person receive the help they need. I’ve even made that our slogan for SCOOBUUR; “Let Us Help You Get Around!!!”
