Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Clark.
Anna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
People often ask how long I’ve been doing hair, and my answer is, “Officially since 2003, but honestly, my whole life.”
Long before I ever picked up a cosmetology license, I was the one styling my family’s hair, experimenting with makeup, and convincing anyone who would sit still to let me create a new look. Beauty has always been more than a career to me; it’s been a creative outlet and a way to help people see themselves differently.
After earning my license, I spent my first year assisting at a salon on Camp Bowie in Fort Worth. That experience taught me the value of learning from seasoned professionals, observing everything, asking questions, and building a strong foundation before stepping fully behind the chair.
The next chapter of my career took me to Toni & Guy, where I spent over a decade growing as both an artist and a leader. During those years I worked in education, salon management, and alongside the corporate and creative teams in Dallas. It was an incredible environment that challenged me to refine my technical skills while also understanding what it takes to build a successful salon culture.
Education has remained one of the greatest passions of my career. For more than ten years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Brand Educator for Oligo Professional, teaching other stylists, sharing techniques, and continuing to learn alongside some of the best artists in the industry. I truly believe that our industry never stops evolving, and neither should we.
After leaving the corporate salon world, I became an independent stylist before taking what was probably the biggest leap of my career—opening Collective Salon. Nearly ten years later, our home at 618 S. Jennings Avenue in Fort Worth has become exactly what I envisioned: a creative space where artistry, collaboration, and genuine connection come first.
While I’m incredibly proud of the salon itself, what I’m most proud of is the team we’ve built. Every stylist here brings a unique perspective, talent, and personality to the space. We don’t hire simply to fill a chair; we hire intentionally. Every member of our team has to be someone we all believe in, because the culture we’ve created is just as important as the services we provide. The energy inside our salon is something we protect. It’s what allows both our clients and our artists to feel inspired, comfortable, and genuinely cared for.
More than twenty years into this career, I still love walking into the salon every day. Hair is about so much more than color and cuts; it’s about confidence, creativity, relationships, and helping people leave feeling like the very best version of themselves. Being trusted with that, day after day, is something I’ll never take for granted.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any business owner, there were certainly lessons along the way. I learned that building the right team and making thoughtful business decisions are just as important as the creative side of this industry.
Without question, though, the greatest challenge was navigating the pandemic. Almost overnight, we went from serving our clients every day to being unable to open our doors. It wasn’t just a financial hardship; it was heartbreaking. Our salon has always been a place where people come to feel confident, cared for, and connected, and suddenly we couldn’t provide that for our community or earn a living doing what we love.
Even after reopening, recovery wasn’t immediate. It took years for clients’ schedules and routines to return, and in many ways, the industry has never been the same. Consumer habits shifted, operating costs increased, and the price of professional products continued to climb. More recently, tariffs have driven those costs even higher, creating a difficult balancing act. We want to continue using the highest quality products while keeping our services accessible to our clients, so we’ve had to become incredibly intentional about every business decision we make.
That experience taught me resilience. It reinforced that success isn’t measured by how easy the journey is, but by your ability to adapt, support your team, and continue showing up for your clients, even through the most challenging seasons.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Creativity has always been at the heart of everything I do. Hair is an art form; it allows me to blend technical precision with personal expression, creating something unique for every guest who sits in my chair. No two people are the same, and I love the challenge of designing looks that not only complement someone’s features but also reflect who they are.
One of the things that makes Collective Salon special is that creativity isn’t limited to one style or one type of client. We specialize in everything from timeless, classic hair to bold fantasy colors, lived in blondes, dimensional brunettes, precision cuts, edgy transformations, and everything in between. We celebrate individuality because no two people should ever feel like they have to fit into the same mold.
From the very beginning, I wanted Collective Salon to be a judgment free space where everyone feels welcome, respected, and comfortable being themselves. Whether someone is trying a vivid fashion color for the first time, embracing their natural gray, looking for a dramatic transformation, or simply wanting to feel refreshed after a difficult season in life, every guest deserves to be met with kindness and without judgment.
As much as I love creating beautiful hair, what I’m most proud of today is the culture we’ve built. We didn’t create a salon around filling chairs, we built it around people. Every stylist on our team brings a different perspective, specialty, and artistic style, allowing us to serve a wonderfully diverse clientele with confidence and authenticity.
I’m incredibly intentional about who joins our salon. Talent matters, but character matters even more. We only welcome someone into our team when everyone believes they’re the right fit because the culture we’ve built is something we fiercely protect. That positive energy is something our clients feel the moment they walk through the door.
When clients leave feeling more confident than when they arrived, or when one of our stylists reaches a new milestone in their career because of the environment we’ve created together, that’s what makes me the proudest. Trends will always evolve, but creating a space where people feel seen, accepted, and inspired; that’s the legacy I hope to leave.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that surprises people about me is that I genuinely enjoy the services many stylists try to avoid. I love doing kids’ haircuts, perms, and other specialty services because I enjoy the variety and the challenge. I like making every client feel comfortable and cared for, no matter what they’re coming in for.
Outside of the salon, my world revolves around my two kids, who are 19 and 6, so life is always interesting. I also love to travel whenever I can. Exploring new places inspires me creatively and gives me fresh perspectives that I bring back into my work behind the chair.
