Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktoriia Kulhava.
Hi Viktoriia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m originally from Ukraine, and entrepreneurship has always been part of who I am. I started my first business—when I was only 16 years old. After moving to the United States, I lived in Chicago and worked in the events industry, where I was constantly interacting with people. Because I worked directly with customers, having well-maintained nails was always important to me.
As I continued building my career, I completed leadership and management courses through Harvard Business School Online. Later, I was recruited by an oil company in Dallas, which brought me to Texas—and unexpectedly began my journey into the nail industry.
After moving to Dallas, I struggled to find someone who could care for my nails with the quality and attention to detail I was accustomed to in Europe. My first—and last—local salon experience was so disappointing that I went home crying. It made me realize there was a significant gap between European and American nail services, not only in technical quality, but also in customer care and the overall experience.
During a visit back to Ukraine, I began professionally studying manicure techniques. When I returned to Dallas, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue seriously. At first, nails were my side business while I continued working in the oil industry. I invested in advanced education, traveled to learn new techniques, tested professional products, and remained committed to providing consistently high-quality services.
As demand grew, my side business became my full-time career. Today, I am the proud owner of VK Nailhaus, a high-end nail studio in the Lakewood area of Dallas. We have built a loyal clientele and a growing team, and we are continuing to expand. VK Nailhaus is about much more than beautiful nails—it is about precision, education, exceptional customer service, and creating an experience that every client remembers.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
That is a funny question, because I don’t think any business owner would ever describe the journey as a smooth road! Owning a business does not make life easier—it becomes another major responsibility. I have two children, and I often joke that VK Nailhaus is my third child—and sometimes the neediest one.
Every day brings a new challenge. We welcome different clients with different expectations, personalities, and nail conditions. Many come to us with damaged nails after visiting other salons, so our responsibility goes beyond creating something beautiful. We must choose the right technique, restore the health of their nails, provide an exceptional experience, and ensure every client feels heard and cared for. As my team grows, I also have the responsibility of maintaining our standards and making sure every person represents the values of VK Nailhaus.
For me, the greatest challenge has been balancing my personal life, motherhood, and the demands of the business. You may leave the studio, but the business does not leave your mind. There are always messages to answer, decisions to make, problems to solve, and ideas for how to improve.
I have learned that being a business owner means being fully present, leading every day, and continuing to move forward even when things become difficult. The road has not always been easy, but every challenge has helped me become a stronger owner, educator, and leader.

I often joke that I must have been a dentist in a past life, because I simply continued working with the same level of precision—but now applied to nails.
