Check Out Mandy Popejoy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Popejoy.

Hi Mandy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a cottage wedding and dessert artist. I started out because I could always bake well, but I had my first child and I wanted to make her a cute decorated cake for her 1st birthday. I took some classes at my local JR college and fell in love with it. Before I knew it friends and family started asking me to make stuff for them. I found a friend who wanted to go to a cake club so we went together. I met the most amazing person in that club, Earlene Moore, who had a passion for making beautiful wedding cakes and amazing sugar flowers. She introduced me to the world of cake decorating and I joined the International Cake Exploration Society. I was able to take classes with amazing cake artists and define my skills. I was able to participate in a Food Network Challenge with a friend. It has been an amazing journey. I have been baking smiles for over 24 years and I love what I do. My desire is to make cakes and desserts not only look good but taste amazing too.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth as when I first started the cottage laws were not in place and baking out of your home was frowned upon by many people and businesses. Trying to find licensed kitchens to work out of and still be able to make an income was hard. Then the cottage laws started coming into effect and it got a lot easier. Trends are also another obstacle, as you have to stay current with the brides.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create beautiful one of a kind wedding cakes and make them unique to the bride and groom for their special day. I love to make hand crafted sugar flowers so the bride can keep them as a keepsake after the wedding. I am most proud of being able to make memories for that special day. I think the skills I learned from being a part of the international cake club has let me travel all over the United States and learn from some of best in this field. I am constantly learning and absorbing things. I just enjoy what I do and I love to share what I do with others as well.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that it is not too big so you get that rural community vibe and most everyone is nice. The least thing I like is the drivers. Too many people in a hurry and on there phones not paying attention.
