Check Out Shane Blackwell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Blackwell.

Hi Shane, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
A few years ago, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life.

I sold my landscaping company because I wanted something I couldn’t get back, more time with my family. Becoming a stay-at-home dad gave me the opportunity to be present for the moments that matter most while figuring out what was next.

After about two years at home with my kids, I began freelancing as a site manager for a music festival and event production company. While working on events across the country, I was introduced to professional drone operations and saw firsthand how valuable drones could be. They were not just capturing incredible footage. They were helping teams plan, document, and manage large-scale projects.

The more I learned, the more I realized drones were much more than cameras in the sky. They were powerful tools that could help businesses work more efficiently, communicate progress, and make better decisions.

That inspired me to earn my FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, allowing me to legally conduct commercial drone operations. I continued investing in professional equipment and expanding my knowledge of aerial photography, videography, mapping, inspections, and site documentation.

Today, SQO SkyWorks serves businesses throughout the greater Charlotte area by providing professional drone services for construction, commercial properties, real estate, marketing, events, and more. Whether it is creating cinematic marketing content, documenting construction progress, or producing high-accuracy orthomosaic maps, every flight is focused on delivering value and helping clients see their projects from a new perspective.

What started as a desire to spend more time with my family has grown into a business that combines technology, creativity, and problem solving. SQO SkyWorks is built on relationships, professionalism, and a commitment to helping businesses tell their story and operate more efficiently from above.

I am grateful for everyone who has supported this journey, and I am excited to see where the next flight takes us.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Building SQO SkyWorks has been incredibly rewarding, but it has not been without challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles was starting over. After selling my landscaping company, I was entering an entirely new industry where I had to earn trust, build credibility, and prove myself from the ground up.

Learning the technology was another challenge. Flying a drone is one thing, but mastering aerial photography, videography, mapping, FAA regulations, airspace authorizations, and professional editing is a completely different skill set. There was a steep learning curve, and I committed countless hours to training and continuing my education.

Like many small business owners, I also had to learn that running a business involves much more than providing a great service. Marketing, networking, sales, accounting, website development, SEO, and client communication all became part of the job.

There were plenty of moments of self-doubt. Wondering if the investment would pay off, if clients would see the value, and if I was making the right decision. Every entrepreneur experiences those moments.

The biggest lesson I have learned is that success is built through consistency. Showing up every day, continuing to learn, treating people well, and delivering quality work has opened doors that I never could have predicted.

Every challenge has helped shape not only SQO SkyWorks, but also who I am as a business owner, husband, and father.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What do you do?

At SQO SkyWorks, we help businesses see their projects from a new perspective.

We provide professional drone services throughout the greater Charlotte area, specializing in aerial photography, videography, construction site documentation, orthomosaic mapping, inspections, and marketing content. We work with construction companies, commercial property owners, contractors, developers, real estate professionals, and event organizers to capture the visuals and data they need to make better decisions and tell better stories.

What do you specialize in?

While we offer a wide range of drone services, our primary focus is the construction industry.

From documenting project progress and creating high-accuracy maps to producing marketing content that helps companies win new business, we enjoy partnering with clients throughout every phase of a project. We also work with landscape contractors, roofing companies, pool builders, commercial properties, dealerships, and community events.

What are you known for?

We strive to be known for reliability, professionalism, and building long-term relationships.

Our clients know they can count on us to show up prepared, communicate clearly, and deliver quality work on time. We believe the best partnerships are built on trust, consistency, and providing value beyond simply flying a drone.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud that SQO SkyWorks was built around people, not equipment.

It started with a desire to spend more time with my family, and today it allows me to help other businesses grow while doing work I genuinely enjoy. Every new client, referral, and repeat customer is a reminder that relationships matter more than anything else.

What sets you apart?

Anyone can buy a drone. What sets us apart is understanding the industries we serve.

My background in landscaping, construction, and project management allows me to understand what clients actually need, not just what looks good from the air. We approach every project with the mindset of solving problems, improving communication, and creating value.

We also continue investing in education, technology, and professional equipment so our clients receive accurate data, high-quality visuals, and dependable service. At the end of the day, our goal is simple. We want to become a trusted partner that businesses know they can rely on whenever they need an aerial perspective.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My faith is the foundation of everything I do, so the Bible has been my greatest source of guidance, wisdom, and encouragement throughout this journey.

I also enjoy listening to inspirational and motivational podcasts that focus on leadership, personal growth, business, and entrepreneurship. I believe there is always something new to learn, whether it is about becoming a better business owner, a better leader, or simply a better person.

Professionally, I make it a priority to stay current with the drone industry. Technology is constantly evolving, and keeping up with FAA regulations, new drone capabilities, software updates, and industry best practices allows me to provide the best possible service to my clients.

I also follow the latest developments from Trimble. As drone mapping and geospatial technology continue to advance, I believe the relationship between drones and Trimble solutions will only become stronger. Staying informed about their innovations helps me better understand how aerial data can integrate with surveying, construction, and site management workflows.

For me, learning is not something that stops once you start a business. It is an ongoing commitment that helps me better serve my clients and continue growing both personally and professionally.
