Daily Inspiration: Meet Brittney Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Taylor.

Brittney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Brittney “Honei B” Taylor, and I am a queer Black writer, creator, and independent filmmaker. Earlier this year, I founded Honei B Makin’ Media Productions, a growing production company committed to centering authentic, multidimensional stories from queer creatives. The company was born from a deep frustration with the lack of meaningful representation I’ve searched for on screen. I wanted to build a space where queer women of color can exist in their fullness; laughing, healing, loving, leading, dreaming, and surviving without their identities being reduced to a plot device.

Our mission is rooted in opportunity, community, and legacy. We aim to uplift queer storytellers both in front of and behind the camera, ensuring their voices are not only heard but valued.

Under the company, I created The Women We Become, an original series currently in pre‑production. The project explores identity, connection, and growth through the lens of queer womanhood, offering the depth and humanity often missing from mainstream LGBTQIA+ portrayals. I’m also developing my first original feature film, further expanding my commitment to telling bold, character‑driven stories grounded in truth and lived experience.

With every project, my goal is simple: to ensure queer audiences (especially queer women of color) finally see themselves reflected with honesty, complexity, and care. Filmmaking, for me, is more than craft. It’s representation, reclamation, and a promise that no one should have to search for themselves on screen and come up empty or stereotyped.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, fear definitely slowed me down. I hesitated to fully step into my passion because I worried about not knowing enough, about who might not support me, and about the possibility of failing. This is my first project, and stepping into something new felt overwhelming at times.

But the experience has turned out to be better than I could have imagined. I’m fortunate to have a dedicated team behind me. People who believe in my vision for Honei B Makin’ Media Productions and who are committed to helping bring my projects to life.

One of the most meaningful moments so far was our casting call. We received so many incredible submissions, and seeing queer creatives of color connect with something I created genuinely warmed my heart. It reminded me why I started and why this work matters.

Right now, I’m moving forward fueled by a vision and a dream, and it’s a dream I’m grateful to be living. I don’t want to wake up from it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a writer, creator, and independent filmmaker specializing in authentic, character‑driven storytelling that centers queer women of color. Through Honei B Makin’ Media Productions, my work focuses on building space, opportunity, and visibility for queer creatives, in general, whose stories are often overlooked or flattened in mainstream media. I’m known for developing narratives that highlight identity, connection, and emotional truth; stories that allow queer characters to exist with depth, nuance, and humanity.

I’m most proud of the community that has formed around my work. Whether through casting calls, collaborations, or early project development, I’ve seen queer creatives of color find resonance and release in the worlds I’m building. That impact, creating work where people finally feel seen, is what drives me.

What sets me apart is my commitment to intentional representation. I don’t just create stories; I create space. My projects are rooted in experience, cultural specificity, and a deep understanding of how powerful it is to see yourself reflected honestly on screen. Every script, every frame, and every collaboration is guided by the belief that storytelling can be both art and liberation.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the voice for the underdog. I’ve always been genuine, outgoing, outspoken, and deeply loyal, especially when it comes to uplifting marginalized communities. As the oldest child on both sides of my family and now a mother of two, that protective, nurturing spirit has been with me my entire life.

I was raised by a terminally ill, single mother alongside my three siblings. Watching her push herself beyond exhaustion to provide for us shaped my work ethic and my fire. That same determination fuels everything I do today. In many ways, my company feels like an extension of that spirit, a womb of creativity, protection, and purpose. My team and the projects created through it are like my babies.

My love for the arts started early. I grew up singing in the choir, writing stories, sketching designs for doll outfits I’d hand‑sew, and filling journals with poems and songs. After a tumultuous 2025, I found healing by reconnecting with that creative foundation. Writing became my release, my grounding, and ultimately my path forward.

Looking back, I can see how every part of my childhood, i.e. the responsibility, the creativity, the resilience, prepared me for exactly what I’m doing now. I truly feel like this is what I was born to do.
