Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Sherry.
Pamela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Pixelimpress is a boutique paper company. I’ve always loved paper, patterns, and color. I started making notecards one day. A friend suggested that I open an Etsy shop. So, I did, in 2008. Having one product sell within a few hours of opening my shop was a positive sign. I continued making products and learning along the way. I actually have a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, so this was quite a swing from that. I’m pretty much self-taught in this arena. I taught myself graphic design programs. I wanted to explore creating designs using marble patterns, so I taught myself how to marble paper (which is not an easy task!). I create greeting cards, notecards, personalized stationery, art prints, notepads, and calling cards… all with my original artwork or designs. I’ve had a strong presence in retail, especially our square calling cards… they’re my best selling item. I’m now trying to focus more on greeting cards and notecards and branch out into the wholesale marketplace.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had some accolades over the years, which is always nice confirmation that your work is enjoyed. Retail for me has been a smoother road than the wholesale market. I’ve had some clients who have been with me for 8+ years. Wholesale is a different market. There is strong competition out there right now. Finding your voice and brand is critical. And, I think that would be my #1 advice for anyone starting out with any business… find your voice, find your brand and don’t be swayed by what others are doing.
Please tell us about pixelimpress.
I create design forward, environmentally conscious paper goods… greeting cards, notecards, art prints, postcards, notepads, calendars, and business cards. I think PIXELIMPRESS is best known for our original, colorful patterns and designs. I’m proud of producing high-quality products and always doing my best to meet customer needs. For example, most of my work is custom business cards. I want the person that orders their business cards from me to be excited when they hand out their cards.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
A couple years ago, I invested in attending a conference for stationers. It was so wonderful to meet other creatives who share similar successes and struggles. We have an active Facebook group where we can exchange advice and ideas. It’s wonderful! I also sought out wholesale marketing advice through an online site. The woman who leads that page is phenomenal… she’s a wealth of wholesale knowledge.
