Today we’d like to introduce you to Pineapple Tangaroa.
Pineapple, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve had an interest in body piercing since I was a kid and I was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship and learn how to pierce in high school and was piercing full time through college. I followed my fascination with body piercing and modification through college and received a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Kent State University.
That’s how I came up with the name of Shaman Modifications, we are not “shamans”, however, I wanted to pay tribute to the facilitators of traditional body piercings throughout different societies. Shaman Modifications started in May of 2006 and has been growing and evolving since then, we pride ourselves on our customer service, technical skill, jewelry, safety, and honesty.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been an easy road, especially since I physically built a lot of our Dallas location, and I wasn’t accustomed to physical labor on top of my normal managerial duties at our Austin locations. I ended up working 105 days straight without a day off and was averaging 14.4 hours a day.
By the grand opening of Shaman Modifications Dallas, in October 2017, I was so physically and mentally drained that I didn’t really get to enjoy the fruits of mine and my wife’s sacrifices. But we did it! We overcame hurdles and barriers and business is growing more and more every month.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Shaman Modifications Body Piercing Studio – what should we know?
We specialize in customer care and cleanliness. We cater to our customers and do what we can to make it a pleasant and memorable experience. We understand the anxiety of going in and getting something pierced and that anxiety shouldn’t be compounded with rudeness. Every customer is special, and we appreciate everyone who takes time away from their busy lives to pay us a visit and do something for themselves.
We use implant grade titanium, implant grade niobium, or solid gold to do initial piercings; this allows your body to heal the best and quickest. Implant grade titanium and niobium is superior to surgical steel, which has been largely replaced as an implant material in medical practice.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
My wife. She is the key to all this. I’m the face of the company but she’s the brains behind it all. We had a workable business model, but when she took over she made it profitable. She does not get the credit she deserves EVER. We wouldn’t have our Dallas location without her.
