Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicky Drake.
Hi Nicky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My background is in photography—it’s what I went to school for, I eventually got into video as well —and I’ve always loved travel, food, and drink. As I traveled across my territory for work, I started bringing my camera into new bars and restaurants along the way. I’ve always had a strong connection to the hospitality industry and deep respect for the people in it. That grew into a passion for helping venues shine by capturing their food, cocktails, atmosphere, and events in a way that truly honors their craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t always been easy. I do a lot of cold outreach and emailing to pitch venues, offering flexible rates—from very accessible pricing to free trial shoots. I hear ‘no’ a lot (lol), whether it’s from an email or in person when people don’t want the extra attention a camera and light can bring. But I just keep going, creating content, and posting my work. Keeping my gear light helps me stay out of the way, and staying consistent with my vibrant style has really turned things around. I’m lucky to now have a solid group of local partners I work with regularly, which has led to more people reaching out to hire me for my artistry
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I call myself a hospitality media creator. My bread and butter is branded event coverage with local liquor reps across DFW bars and venues, along with crafting photo and video content for cocktail and food menus. What makes me different is that I actually know the industry from behind the counter. I could step behind your bar right now to prep garnishes, mix classic drinks, and serve guests. Coming from a customer service and food background gives me a huge advantage: I understand the flow, the hustle, and the craft, which lets me shoot in a way that truly honors what the staff is doing.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
