Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Stephens.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have 25 plus years of retail experience starting with Pier 1 Imports. I have worked with wonderful companies like Pottery Barn, Loft, CB2 but I always wanted to open own boutique/online business. In 2022 I decided to take the plunge and start The Fig Tree, LLC. It started as an online store with mainly baby merchandise. After a few months I opened a booth In what once was The Painted Tree in Frisco, Tx. After a a few months there I expanded to the Highland Village location. Both were doing well and I was a 2 years into my business. In may of 2024 I leased a space in Old Town Lewisville and moved my location from my booth at Frisco to there and kept the Highland Village. That year unfortunately did not go as well so I closed that year and moved everything to my booth at the Highland Village Painted tree Location. Everything was going well until The Painted Tree closed every location in April of 2026 and all vendors were forced to take everything out. At that point I just kept my online until vendors from the original Painted Tree company opened a new one called The Collective Boutiques. I have since opened my location back in Highland Village, Tx and still have my online shop. I will be opening a new location in Tyler, Tx in 2 weeks and I am looking at opening 2 more in the future. What I can say is from what I started The Fig Tree to be is not what it currently is. I have had to pivot several times. We now carry home decor, gifts, accessories, and women’s clothing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all. The road is not straight at all. It as many turns, forks in the road and obstacles. Your journey may not be what you planned in the beginning but you can still arrive at your destination in your own way on your own time. I have had many challenges and there will be many more. I am not even close to where I want to be and I have had to make so many adjustments but that is what you learn from.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
This was a split one. In retail I absolutely love people. I sounds cliche but I really do love meeting and helping new people. Helping them decorate them home or chose and outfit, It was always so personal for me.
On the other side I am very creative. My specialty is visuals. I love have a physical space to display merchandise/ clothing the way I want to. I get lost and can work all day on refreshing the store. I love people to come in and get inspired from the designs I have done. I think that is a good combo/ sharing my creativity with my bubbly personality.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Not any one memory but anytime we camped outdoors.
