Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Mashburn.
Hi Carrie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
At my core, I’ve always been driven by four things: my faith, creativity, movement, and encouraging others. My background is in portrait photography and fitness instruction, so helping people step into their confidence has always been a thread running through my life.
On a personal level, my husband Brian and I have been married for 30 years. We’re empty nesters now with three incredible kids, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and the absolute sweetest 18-month-old grandson. Traveling to spend time with them is our top priority in this season.
About six months ago, I felt called to a new personal challenge and a fresh creative outlet, so | launched The Mashburn Edit. I’ve always loved putting affordable outfits together, decorating, or looking at something and thinking, ‘I can make that.’ I strongly believe you don’t have to spend a fortune to have great style or a beautiful home. I started sharing what I was already doing-high-low fashion finds, DIY styling hacks, and simple ways to elevate the everyday.
I had no idea how quickly it would resonate. About two months ago, one of my T-shirt cutting video tutorials went viral, and the account completely exploded overnight.
What’s been most rewarding, though, is realizing that The Mashburn Edit isn’t really about the clothes or the decor.
Those are just the fun vehicles.
The real mission is encouraging women to break out of whatever box society-or they themselves-put them in. I want to remind women of their value and give them permission to live boldly, try something new, and look at their own lives and ask, ‘Why not me?
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road-but honestly, I think that’s what makes it so rewarding.
Launching something totally new at 54 has stretched me in ways I didn’t anticipate. There was a steep learning curve right out of the gate:
mastering short-form video, editing apps, algorithms, and tech platforms. Some days I feel like I’m taking a masterclass in social media before l’ve even finished my first cup of coffee! I’ve really had to give myself permission to be a beginner again.
The other reality of putting yourself online publicly is dealing with negativity. People feel comfortable judging your appearance, your choices, or your work from behind a screen. Some of those comments hurt-I’d be lying if I said they didn’t. But it taught me a valuable lesson: I can’t let someone else’s opinion become my truth.
The ironic thing is that I started this whole platform to
encourage women to step out of their comfort zones, ignore the boxes people put them in, and live boldly. To truly lead this community, l’ve had to practice what I preach. I’ve had to be willing to look silly, make mistakes, and keep showing up anyway. At 54, I’m still learning, still creating, and still willing to put myself out there-and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is truly an extension of who I am. As a photographer, fitness
instructor, and the creator of The Mashburn Edit, I’ve never been someone who fits neatly into just one lane.
What I specialize in is taking things that feel expensive, complicated, or intimidating-whether it’s high-end fashion styling, room design,
hands-on DIY project-and making them completely accessible and doable. I love showing women how to take a budget find, give it a elevated twist, and create a high-end look without spending a fortune.
What sets me apart is that I’m not selling a perfectionist, unattainable lifestyle. I’m 54, I’m learning out loud, and I’m completely comfortable trying something, messing up,
laughing at myself, and showing the real process. That vulnerability keeps it real.
What I’m most proud of, hands down, is the community built around this platform. Viral moments and growth numbers are exciting, but my true measure of success is the message from a woman saying she tackled a DIY she was terrified to try, wore an outfit outside her comfort zone, or walked out the door with a little extra confidence.
At the end of the day, I want women to leave my page feeling inspired, never intimidated-and ready to say,
“I can do that, too.”
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
The resources I use are always evolving, but my goal is always the same: finding tools that spark creativity, simplify life, and keep me learning.
For inspiration and content creation, Instagram, Tik Tok, YouTube and Pinterest are my daily go-to’s for trend-spotting and visual ideas. I rely heavily on shopping and secondhand resale apps to hunt down unique vintage decor, fashion
finds, and budget-friendly pieces.
On the design side, Canva and CapCut are absolute lifesavers
When it comes to books, I’m drawn to coffee table and interior design books that offer practical inspiration, as well as stories of women who have built meaningful lives, businesses, and second acts.
For audiobooks and podcasts,
terms of blogs and creators, I follow women who focus on approachable style, DIY projects, fitness, and everyday
living. I’m naturally drawn to creators who show the real, unpolished process rather than perfection.
At the end of the day, I’m an endless learner. Keeping that curiosity alive-constantly saving ideas and experimenting with new resources-is what keeps The Mashburn Edit feeling fresh and authentic.
