Today we’d like to introduce you to Hanna Jennings.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
To start, art has always been a part of my life, in every form. My interest in painting began in college, at the University of Texas at Austin, when I was given a bit more wiggle room to express myself. Artists like Cy Twombly, Basquiat, and Sargent encouraged me to be bold. After a residency for a month in New York, something changed a bit. They way I began to see life and art, and art and life, began to resonate deeper. Since then, I’ve focused my art into using upcycled materials, creating custom pigments, and allowing the organic to intertwine with the organic. I’ve involved myself in numerous projects involving photography, painting, sculptures, gardening, and more. I’ve also allowed dance and yoga to allow me to find a flow within my works, alongside architectural and philosophical studies. As of now, I am both a painter and sculptor, as well as designer and explorer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not! You are constantly reinventing yourself, ridding and gaining, and ridding again. Sometimes the “weight” is heavy. Staying true to your vision comes with costs. I’ve found the simple act of believing in yourself and continuing to do your work “right” pays off. Long term journey’s will never be smooth, but thats the price of having a great story.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think I am known for my abstractions a bit. My “Pink Pollution” series involving upcycled materials transformed into sculptures caught the eye of the public, as well as my blue/black series + my sprayed bold abstractions. I am experimental, and as much as I might be known as one thing to one person, I am something to someone else.
I am most proud of my deep explorations. I am more scientific than I give myself credits for. I always allow my neurodivergence to set me a part. To think a bit more outside the box.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Be different, but also structured. I always say balance wins. If I allow myself enough space to be crazy, In return, I owe myself enough of a space to be structured. Experimenting has pushed me forward in tons of ways. Don’t be afraid to be curious. The journey to the answer can be filled with multiple answers to other questions along the way.
