Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Cobb.
Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My music journey began when I was in the 7th grade. Every morning I would call the station and try to be caller number 8, which I got almost every time. I had it down to the exact sciene and would win CDS and concert tickets all the time. I won so much that eventually Rock 108 just told me to ask. I met so many incredible artists in that time, and my passion for live music was born from that. I would take this little digital camera to shows and try to capture them the way I would see it. Some of the images weren’t actually that bad, considering how technology was in the mid 2000s.
My junior year of highschool I decided to take a photography class. I was very interested in learning the different types of photography there was. This was my first opportunity to actually shoot with a DSLR camera. We were allowed to check them out and take them home. So I practiced.on my friends and the football team, but it wasn’t exactly where I found the passion ya know ? I just kept thinking about live music. Eventually this lovely friend of mine who worked at Pac Sun at the time got me connected with this local band named Actually December. I kind of became their photographer and there I got to feel the true rush of live photography. Everything from shows to promos, it was a rush. Watching people interact with the bands, reminded me why I loved attending concerts so much. That’s when I decided my dream was to be a concert photographer.
I ended up taking about a 10 year hiatus after highschool, until I was able to finally get my own DSLR. It was a pawnshop buy just your entry level camera, Canon Rebel T6i. I started to get the itch to get back into music. So I bravely submitted to a festival, which I didn’t get but it started something for me. I was actually able to get connected with some of the members from Actually December (now soothsayer) and that’s what kicked started my journey again. I traveled with them a lot, one of the biggest opportunities was when they opened for Lorna Shore. I got to meet the crew and their TM gave me advice that kind of shaped how I do things. From then on I worked with over a 100 bands local, national and everything in between.
Building a community through photos isn’t an easy task, but the relationships and connections I’ve built over the years have roughly shaped who I am today. Never letting the doubt take over and constantly trying to improve has led me to some amazing opportunities. I aspire to be someone that can help photographers that were where I was at one point. I still have a lot of growth and learning to do with my craft but I am so thankful to have been able to reach the dream I’ve had since I was 16 years old.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no, it was not a very smooth road. Gear isn’t cheap, and you have to make sure you pay attention to it. There was a time I was hired to work for this band Jeune, and right in the middle of their set my shutter broke. It freaked me out because I thought my camera was done for. I had just traveled from Abilene to Lubbock and I didn’t want to disappoint my band. Luckily I was able to make it work to my advantage and got some unique shots, but it was stressful trying to figure out what to do next.
Also being able to travel whenever I want has been a struggle. I’m a mom of three, so I have to plan everything down to a T. It’s a balancing act but worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am primarily a concert photographer. That is my passion and what I am most known for. But I am much more than that when it comes to the art. I am a visual storyteller. Whether that is a perfect curated set (when I have the props and space) a hand drawn art piece, creative direction, video, or flyer, I can help someone with whatever they need.
What I am most proud of are the genuine connections I have made within the music scene. They are the ones that recognize me, even if it’s been 3 years. And that’s what music is all about man. It’s about community and bonding over something that speaks to you. You’re listening to the same song but it resonates differently with everyone.
I don’t know what truly sets myself apart from others, I just know I have my style. I am more worried about telling the story than I am wanting it for my portfolio. These are moments we will look back on. I’d rather my artists or families to look back at their images and be like yeah I remember this. This day was so fun and we made so many memories ect.
