Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Thomas.
Hi Victor , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I started out rapping over instrumentals I found, and recording on this old 80’s boombox that required cassette tapes. My fascination for Dinosaurs played a big part of my artistry. I also danced a majority of my life as well. Ranging from School Talent Shows to Pep Rallies with the Dance Team I was apart of at the time. I attended Richland College in 2012 after graduating from High School that same year, where I met another amazing person, Tony Jones. Every month he threw shows in the cafeteria area called “Live On Jones Street” he believed in me and we bonded due to the fact that we were both creatives. I also met Jeff (Altitude) and Court Rock. We would record mixtape after mixtape like we were famous. In 2014 I met my really good friend Gustavo Banales. We got this crazy idea from other artists that went to Richland to throw a jam session live in the outdoors of the campus. We even made Fox News ! My freestyle verse got cut though. I didn’t find out about Deep Ellum until maybe 2016. I wasn’t really doing shows like that before, but I would record mixtapes. Gustavo convinced this person who ran a showcase to let me get on the mic. I did stuff from my mixtape and even a freestyle at the end. I was so happy with all the noise I got afterwards. At this time, this venue formerly known as Drugstore Cowboy would throw jam sessions every Wednesday until late 2017. I jumped in at any chance I could. That’s what music does to me. I think that’s where my name got bigger. I finally stopped being scared and released the first official project during the start of the pandemic in 2020. Our band had a residency from 2021 until now. This year I kinda stepped back so I could release this new project. I’m really happy about this. I have the love of the people which multiplied each year, which helped with getting this project the bump it needed. I want to showcase that the black nerd community can get into spaces, not just conventions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Dallas Hop-Hop Politics made things kind of hard. People tend to hate what they don’t understand. Also, trying to balance working a full time job with not many off days, while trying to create content and music drained me a lot of times. But I think since I believed in myself, no one could tell me anything.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for being a person of the people. They mean something to me. I’m a husband too, so I take that job seriously ! There’s a song I made called “Jurassic Park” where 70+ people used it on TikTok. I went and thanked everyone. I’m most proud that we got nominated this year for a Dallas Music Award. I love doing complicated patterns and flows that aren’t easy the first try. I think being a black nerd sets me apart from others, and not just the casual one either. I’m very proud I finally got to take a chance on myself again and release this new project after 6 years.
What matters most to you?
My Family, Wife, Friends, and fans. They make sure I have a safe space. They believe in me.
