Meet Rachel Oppenheimer, PsyD of Therapy Hive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Oppenheimer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Rachel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have wanted to be a psychologist since I was 12 years old and befriended a schoolmate with autism. He and I ended up remaining friends, and throughout high school, I was in the peer counseling program and continued to pursue the psychology world through undergraduate and graduate school. I am originally from Florida, but came to Dallas to complete my internship and then my fellowship with UT Southwestern.

I then entered into the private practice world, and started my own private practice, Upside Therapy & Evaluation Center, in 2016. It was while I was starting my practice that it felt like much of what I was doing was reinventing the wheel. I know many others in private practice had gone through the stages that I had, of marketing my business, setting up a website, and connecting with referral sources. It was from there that I had the idea for Therapy Hive, an online collaborative space for helping professionals, and for clients to find the right fit!

Has it been a smooth road?
As the idea has germinated and grown, there have been several pivots and evolutions of Therapy Hive. Initially, my idea was to create a “bricks and mortar” physical space where Therapy Hive helping professionals could work together. However, the idea became so large, and I wanted to include so many people within the collective, that a virtual space made more sense to us.

Marketing is hard for therapists in general – there are many ethical regulations that must be observed for us to market our businesses, and graduate programs are notorious for not teaching the “business” side of the practice. Stepping out of my personal comfort and being the “face” of something other than my therapy practice has been challenging – but rewarding! I’ve learned so much about myself – and I’ve had the support of my co-founders and board members to help me along the way.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Therapy Hive is a multidisciplinary online directory, including anyone in the helping profession, as there has been a growing need for collaborative healthcare. We also offer professional development opportunities, a resource directory, and an events calendar of local professional development activities. We are local, and have a verification process unique to any other therapy directory, making sure everyone who is a part of Therapy Hive actually possess the specializations they are representing.

Therapy Hive officially launched in October 2017 and has grown quickly since then. We offer professional development and marketing opportunities across the Metroplex and have a diverse group of professionals within our membership community.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I’m a transplant to Dallas and I’ve been so impressed with all the opportunities that exist here! Rather than encountering a sense of competitiveness by professionals for clients or resources, everyone I’ve met has embraced collaboration, and are committed to working together.

There is a pride that comes from being in Dallas that is pretty unique compared to other cities I’ve lived in, and that translates to every transaction and connection made. People are happy to be here and happy to help others! Our hope is to eventually expand into other cities, but I can’t imagine a better city to have launched Therapy Hive than the DFW Metroplex.

Pricing:

  • We offer monthly membership plans for providers to be members of Therapy Hive, starting at $25 a month (not as expensive as other directories who offer far less member features!)
