Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Sanchez.
Edgar, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
My name is Edgar Sanchez, owner of ArkonLabs Photography. I have a degree in computer science and work full time as a software developer in Plano, TX. I’m pretty different from other photographers in that I approach photography as a science, I even read manuals cover to cover to make sure I know how every single feature works.
My story as a photographer began when I was a junior in high school. At that time, I worked at Best Buy and got awesome discounts on electronics. I started off by buying a Sony Cybershot DSC-H10 point and shoot and learning everything about it. Eventually people started to notice my work and a few local car clubs asked me to take photos for them. For the next two years, I sort of became their official photographer.
With the money that I made from working with the car clubs, I was able to afford an entry level DSLR, a Canon Rebl T1i. This camera was completely different from the last one and I made it my priority to learn how to use it to its full potential.
That entry level camera traveled with me everywhere I went and I pushed it as far as it could go. I learned to use off camera lighting and learned how to wield a Speedlight. I had the privilege of working with the Dallas Junior Chamber of Commerce and photographed some amazing non-profit events, and eventually upgraded to a more professional DSLR.
Recently I focused the majority of my time on school and took some time off from photography, only bringing my camera out when I would travel, and to take photos of my dogs. During my time at school I met Justin O’keith, who gave me the opportunity to join him during his photoshoots, events, and to learn from him and his team.
Professionally, I primarily focus on portraits and fitness, but I enjoy all types of photography such as landscape, wildlife, and real estate. I hope to keep growing, learning, and sharing my knowledge with those around me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My art is mostly in the form of digital photography though I do enjoy large prints. My goal is to showcase the human body and get people to take a second glance at my photos.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success comes in many forms and some artists have different goals. Photography is a professional hobby that I love and I think that’s why I get to enjoy it more than many other full time photographers. I’m able to step away when I need to seek inspiration since I have a separate job.
As far as my own success, I consider myself successful if I’m enjoying what I do. And I absolutely love photography!
