Meet Trailblazer Esther Huynh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Huynh.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Esther. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began really loving photography at an early age when I first received a Polaroid iZone Sticky Camera for Christmas when I was kid. I was immediately taken by the charm of taking a photo and seeing it appear in front of you was magical. Since then, the allure of creating something from your own eyes and making it come into a space where others can view it still exists. Photography started off slowly for me as merely a way to create mementos with friends. It realy changed fo me when I took a workshop in Western Kentucky Unversity my senior year of high school. I was introduced to photographer Jahi Chiwendiu who told me that you can really transform a image into a compelling story. From using different lighting techniques and unique composition, images really were a powerful tool to bring the world to others. After that, I pursued photography and began studying artistic photographic techniques in college. Finally, after college and apprenticeship, I found a love to use creative photography to make images for the commercial world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely was not an easy road. When I began in the industry, I was already working against the norms. I was young. I was Asian. I was female. I predominately worked with much older white men who often were kind and full of knowledge but they didn’t take it easy on me. Not that I asked for favors, but there weren’t many people to relate to and speak with about how to deal with some of the more uncomfortable aspects of the job. Culturally, my parents expected me to do something that suited the status quo. In the workplace, it’s hard to trust and respect a 5’3″ 110 lbs. woman who looks like she’s still in high school. There was a great deal for me to prove. I had to work extremely hard driving far away to assist on photoshoots, carrying tons of heavy equipment, and making sure not to “bring attention” to myself in the workplace. I was soft spoken and said yes to everything. I’ve changed a lot since my early photo assistant days and I have found that things have changed a lot more. I work with so many creative females and extremely talented people.

If there was any advice that I could give, I would say TRUST IN YOURSELF. I have found multiple times that no matter what you look like and who you are, YOUR WORK will speak for itself. When others see you want something, they’ll help you no matter what. Surround yourself with others who are like minded and I promise you all the hard work you do WILL pay off.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Esther H. Photography – what should we know?
My photo business strictly caters to Photography for corporate, commercial and editorial needs. I’m known for photographing many skincare and beauty products. I love working with my clients and taking them to another level of branding and marketing that encompasses the photos I’ve shot for them but also satisfying their needs as a business. I really take pride in the clients I’m privileged to work with. I respect their time, their craft, their products, and as a result want to market them as a consumer as well. I set myself apart to really take the time to listen to their objectives and goals and do my best to be an integral service to them.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
There are so many places for inspiration and encouragement for life and work. I listen to Radiolab. I am a frequent visitor to my local library. When I can, I’ll travel someplace new and explore art museums.
