Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Hall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I spent my first 16 years living in Saudi Arabia where my father worked for Aramco. We lived on a mostly American, company owned compound. It was a fantastic place to grow up and afforded us the ability to see the world. As a kid, I was exposed to cultures and art from all over. There was probably not a much better way for kid to grow up, especially one that would end up as an artist. After high school, I worked as a paramedic for several years. I did piercings on the side to make extra money and after a few years of that I was given the opportunity to learn to tattoo. The rest is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with everything in life we’ve had ups and downs but nothing we couldn’t get past. We have a great crew here and they always seem to come together in a pinch. Every once in a while, we will have a personality clash but most times one of the other guys will step in and we can get right past it.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J. Hall & Co. Gentleman Tattooers story. Tell us more about the business.
The shop is ultimately just a place I wanted to get tattooed. It is the result of getting tattooed and working in all kinds of tattoo shops over the years. My goal was to create a comfortable, relaxing environment where you could get a tattoo without all the chaos of regular life intruding on you. It feels much easier to escape and let go when you’re in a calming space. We have taken from Eastern and Pacific cultural ideologies in our approach to tattooing. We have four artists with a broad range of styles ranging from traditional American to realism. I like to think we have someone for everyone. We can tattoo pretty much anything you may want, but we’ll try to steer you towards the best possible tattoo we can get you. If an idea isn’t going to last or will look poor in a very short time we will definitely tell you. We are not the gate keepers, just the tour guides on your tattoo journey. The end result is a place I am proud to have my name on.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
No luck about it. Just good old fashioned hard work and drive.
