Meet Rebecca Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Johnson.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
The old sketchbooks in my studio tell my artistic story. From the time I was very young, I loved to draw. I remember sitting with my pastor’s wife when I was a little girl in New Mexico, learning to draw flowers and vases. I drew whatever caught my eye, but somewhere along the way my love for animals took over.

Years ago, in a class, someone suggested I do pet portraits. That idea stuck with me, and I’ve been slowly growing my pet portrait business for many years. Now that my husband and I are empty-nesters, there is more time to devote to art. Living in Historic McKinney, an art-focused and pet-loving community, has been a great fit.

I’ve taken many art classes in school and from private instructors, as well as earning a Pet Portrait Diploma from the London Art College. I continue to take classes, learn new techniques, and get involved in community art events. One of my current projects is to do portraits of dogs who are rescued by an organization called Dallas DogRRR, where we got our sweet Maple. I hope to spread the word about the many dogs who are just waiting for the chance to experience kindness and love in a home of their own.

Please tell us about your art.
Most of my current work is commissioned Pet Portraits. I work from my customers’ favorite photo, using oil, pastel, colored pencil or graphite—whatever best suits the customer and the subject. My goal is to make the pet look alive. I often find myself smiling as I stare into the sweet face of someone’s beloved pet. When I’m given information about the personality and history of my subjects, it makes me feel like I know them.
The most unexpected compliment I ever received was from my little Shih Tzu—he stood at a portrait’s eye level and started barking at it! But what I hope to see when a portrait is received is a big smile, or even an occasional tear. Then I know it is just right!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work is displayed in Texas and in Michigan at:
