Conversations with the Inspiring Melissa Sims

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Sims.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I truly fell in love with makeup when I was about 15 years old. That was near the time when YouTube beauty gurus were really big and that’s where I got all of my makeup tips and product suggestions, I still remember when I bought my very first high-end product it was an Urban Decay Pocket Rocket lip gloss and it was bright pink. After that makeup became my life. I became obsessed with learning all these different techniques and using different products and exploring other brands it quickly has become a constant source of happiness in my life. I grew up in Southern California and moved out here to North Texas in September of last year. Shortly after being out here, I decided to see if there was a makeup school just for the heck of it thinking that because it was Texas there wouldn’t be one. I was surprised to find a school that was out of Irving that offered a makeup program that taught all types of makeup from beauty and bridal to stage and special effects. I started in November and just completed on the 20th of April. I can truly say that I wouldn’t have pursued my passion for makeup if it weren’t for my amazing friends and family supporting me. I consider myself so lucky to have found a lifelong career in a booming industry at 23.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were times when I was in school, that I wanted to just quit and walk away but my instructors kept pushing me to finish and I am so grateful that they did. I am definitely my own worst critic, in my eyes, my work is never good enough which is a blessing and a curse. On one hand, I am always pushing myself to work harder and improve but on the other hand, I am constantly stressing myself out. As for any advice that I have, it would be to never stop pursuing your dreams. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I could make a living doing makeup and here I am living my best life. You are definitely going to hit a few walls on your journey but keep knocking them down and moving on. I can guarantee you that if you aren’t doing something that you love and are passionate about, you are never going to be truly happy.

What should we know about Melissa Sims MUA? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a makeup artist here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I specialize in beauty makeup and special effects. I would definitely say that my most recent creature look is the one that I am the proudest of. It took me nearly 7 hours to complete and featured a bald cap, silicone prosthetic, foam latex appliances, and tons of airbrush. I would say my unique personality makes me stand out, I am a total goofball and quite quirky.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
As cliche as it sounds, I would say to never stop believing in yourself and to never give up. If I gave up, I wouldn’t be here today doing what I love.
