Meet Sh’Niqua Alford of Restoring Serenity Counseling Center in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sh’Niqua Alford.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my college experience knowing nothing of social work until my freshman year at Texas Christian University where I took a social work elective class on addictions. From that moment, I knew that I wanted to be a social worker; one of the greatest professions aimed at helping vulnerable and oppressed people to become empowered and successful on their path through life. This journey has not been easy, but has been worth every hurdle, barrier, and obstacle. Being a first generation college student, I knew that I had the capacity to change outcomes for myself, my son, and my entire family. Now, I am a proud entrepreneur; owning a mental health private practice.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey toward my accomplishments has not been easy. During my freshman year in college, I became pregnant with my son. Though I was only 18 years old I was determined not to let becoming a teen mother halt my path. I have continued to persevere, remembering that I have my son watching every decision that I make. As a result, I have overcome struggles that some people don’t even know that I have endured. I strive to stay committed to my goals; despite the sleepless nights with a young child or studying and working multiple jobs at a time.

Restoring Serenity Counseling Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Restoring Serenity Counseling Center is a mental health private practice located in Arlington, Texas. I provide counseling/therapy services to children ages 4 and older, as well as adolescents and adults. I am most known for my work with young children and being one of few African American therapists in this area that provide play therapy interventions and techniques. Mental health treatment has such a stigma in the African American community; my goal is to break down these barriers and help all people gain access to affordable and quality mental health treatment. Being a female, African American entrepreneur sets me apart from others. I have a testimony to share in life and my own experiences make me relatable and easy for my clients to confide in with confidence that I can help them meet their own goals.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moments have been accomplishing my goals while my son has cheered me on. He has been by my side during my undergraduate and graduate careers and has no idea that he is my biggest motivation. My niece, who I view as my own child, recently shared with someone that I inspire her because of my accomplishments. Knowing that I have these young, impressionable minds watching everything that I do in life is what pushes me to continue to do great things.
