Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Roddy.
Dominic, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I honestly could never find any cute accessories. My friends and I would make our own hoop earrings to match our outfits. As my obsession grew so did my yarn collection. So much so that I started exploring other ways to use yarn.
Eventually I taught myself how to crochet and began customizing my own patterns. Six years later we’re in 2018.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Far from a smooth road! A few struggles I had were branding my business, figuring out my audience and showcasing my items.
I was extremely nervous at my first showcase, I didn’t know what to expect and I’m terrible at small talk!! I learned very quickly that presentation is key so I started investing my creativity into my displays and advertising.
It took about two years for me to understand the importance of finding your targeted audience. There were shows I would sell out and there were other shows where people kept it moving. It was all trial and error.
Branding I found a little bit challenging because you can’t just stamp your logo on crochet and expect the consumer to know the difference. It’s always an ego booster when a customer takes heed in my neat stitching and the subtle placement of my logo tags.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I like to describe CCbyDominic as The Perfect Accessory. Whether you’re the girl that loves distinctive earrings, the Aunt that wears winter scarves or the Mom that can’t get enough of handmade handbags.
I’m most proud of the originality of our accessories. My ability to create my own patterns will continuously set CCbyDominic apart from the rest.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up my parents instilled in me the importance of hard work. You have to work for all the things you desire. That may have played a major part in me wanting to get my first job at the age of 15.
In my youth, I loved making beaded necklaces, reading Judy Blume novels, boy bands and hanging with my friends. I was never the sporty girl or the girly girl, somewhere in between.
