Nike and Fisola, please share your story with us.
The Art of Finesse is a luxury party styling and event planning company. We specialize in children’s parties and social events. We are sisters and best friends. We are extremely close and attended the same schools up through college. The story starts with our mother who loved to entertain and throw parties. When she entertained, everything was very detailed and precise. Our love for entertaining and throwing fabulous events stemmed from her. My daughter (Nike talking) was turning one and I did not want the typical or cookie cutter party. So, Fisola and I started planning and thought of Alice in Wonderland. This was back in 2010. The party was a big hit and most of the guests had not seen a party with so many details like the table settings where the kids sat or the dessert station that had intricate designs. And from that point, people sought out our help and for a long time we helped out friends and family for no charge. Eventually, it dawned on us we could actually make a business of our passion. In 2014, we began operating as a business. We have been featured in Dallas Child Magazine, Catch My Party and Kara’s Party Ideas. At The Art of Finesse, you can expect to have a one of a kind event. You don’t have to worry about anything, leave the details to us. Our passion is creating memories that will last a lifetime. We offer creative packages and any custom theme of your choice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road and there were several times we wanted to throw in the towel. We both came from the telecom industry and both our degrees are in Public Relations and Communications. Unfortunately for us, we had no entrepreneurial or business background and as a result, we made a lot of mistakes as business owners. Our pricing was totally off and people took advantage of us. We were not paying ourselves and barely made even. We also ended up buying a lot of inventory of items that became useless to us. We were creative and had the planning process, however, we had a little trouble tracking how much was coming in and going out. We have since learned from our mistakes and fortunate to have our younger sister who is a CPA on our team. She keeps us in check. We have been in business 4 years and have gained a lot of exposure through social media, print, and word of mouth. We continuously attend business seminars and event summits to make sure we keep up with the trends in the event industry.

The Art of Finesse is a luxury children’s party and social events planning company. We are known for our modern and very detailed events. We offer 3 packages. The confetti, Sprinkle, and Sweet Tooth Package.
The confetti is a custom package and designed for the client who does not have the time or patience to deal with the details of the event and planning process. This is a full-service package. The sprinkle package is for the client who has the planning process under control but still needs a small amount of professional assistance. The sweet tooth package is for clients who need a dessert table. The dessert table is usually the focal point of the event and is now an ongoing trend to have one at your event. We are most proud of how far we have come as business women. Our events speak for itself. Based on the feedback we receive, our clients are truly happy and satisfied with us. And as a result, we have had a lot of repeat customers and most of our business is through client referrals.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
In the beginning, we did not have a lot of good luck, we made a poor judgment and barely broke even. However, we were determined to turn things around and make it work. We were resilient and determined. Failure or giving up was not an option. I believe that has made us stronger. we definitely have learned from our mistakes. As far as good luck, we have been fortunate to be surrounded by awesome family and friends. They have consistently encouraged and emotionally supported us. In addition, we are lucky to have great vendors who help to make our jobs easier.
