Meet Trailblazer Ginny Griffin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginny Griffin.

Ginny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my Instagram account the summer going into my freshmen year of college, just as a way to document the yummy food I was eating. I’ve always loved food and social media, so I guess somewhere along the way, I realized I wanted to make my account more serious about blogging.

In the beginning, I really just followed some friends and restaurants. But, once I realized I could really gain traction, I would follow restaurant accounts and those who already followed Austin/Houston food Instagram accounts, with hopes that they would follow me back. I also would get 100+ followers in one day when bigger accounts would report me.

Nowadays, I don’t really follow accounts unless their food bloggers, restaurants, other Texas bloggers, etc. It’s nice to have one place to find cool new restaurant ideas, see pictures tagged #texasfoodgawker that I may repost, and see delicious food pictures taken by others.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely been a struggle for confidently communicate with my thousands of followers. Sometimes, when I post pictures that are semi-personal or have more in-depth captions, I get insecure that my followers don’t care to see or read this. It’s important to be confident in whatever you’re doing.

We’d love to hear more about texasfoodgawker.
First and foremost, I provide a place for Texans to find great food in their cities. I spend a majority of my time in Houston and Austin, so that’s where I get most of my personal food pictures. However, I repost from other accounts in other cities that tag #texasfoodgawker. Personally, I am most proud of the high-quality I demand my images. I don’t typically post flash pictures because I don’t believe the food looks the best it can. For me, it is a priority to make sure my account is eclectic and that all the pictures are well-done. I believe what sets me apart is my authenticity when running the account.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I am a big fan of Planoly. I started using it in early 2018 and it’s extremely helpful. It’s an Instagram assistant app that allows users to plan out their posts, schedule them for certain days and times, and see the Instagram grid to make sure my feed is cohesive.
