Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Wyne.
Kay, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Born in Macomb, Illinois, I was raised in a family where my parents encouraged and supported any creative processes that I wanted to do. I was always busy making and creating something. I have a bachelor’s degree in Art Education, so I was exposed to many mediums of art: pottery, jewelry, watercolor, acrylic painting, lettering, mixed media, weaving, and oil painting. My true love is oil painting, whether it is in the studio or in plein air.
I worked in the “real world” in banking, owned my own custom frame shop for 17 years and raised a family. I always returned to the easel to paint. Realizing that my passion is painting and creating on canvas, my very supportive husband encouraged me to follow that dream on a full-time basis. I am very fortunate to have a working studio space with other local artists. Last year I joined forces with Artist Sharon Hodges to start Yak Yak Art—to promote and sell our art.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am passionate about painting. Bold brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and textural palette knife work captures a mood or moment in time in contemporary oil paintings on canvas. My expressive abstracts are a personal exploration of color, line, shape, and texture. Inspiration and subject matter for my painterly visions comes from nature and everyday life experiences.
My interest in art has led me to develop my own distinctive style of imagery found in my art. The subject matter for paintings varies, as I find inspiration from the landscape, florals, architectural elements, cows, roosters, horses and birds’ nests. Lately I am painting more and more abstracts. I find the most ordinary objects of daily life interesting subjects to paint. Vibrant colors and loose brushstroke movements are characteristics found in my paintings. I use the palette knife and multiple layers of paint create depth and texture on the canvas, creating a painterly, impressionistic feel.
I love painting on large canvases and do accept commissions. I work with interior designers, architects and galleries to create art for the residential or commercial interiors.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Today’s artist must balance social media, websites, bookkeeping, advertising, and most importantly, studio time. Being left-brained and right-brained is a real plus as today’s artist needs to keep everything in balance. It is very easy to lose the creative process with all the other tasks an artist must do to be successful. Having a supportive network of friends and family is a must!
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I participate in exhibits and juried shows on the local, regional and national level. I am an associate member of Oil Painters of America, Outdoor Painter’s Society, and am a signature member of Artists of Texas. My artwork has been published and featured in numerous magazines, including Western Art Collector, Southwest Art, American Art Collector, Plein Air, The Santa Fean, Riding Magazine and Dallas Business Journal. Currently, my work can be seen at Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas and Lee Small Fine Art in Ft. Worth, Texas. I am in the studio most days, and my work can be seen by appointment there.
