Meet Sagacious Zoo

Brighton Dwinnell, Alex Snell, Jake Smylie, and Southern Simpson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brighton Dwinnell, Sagacious Zoo.

Brighton, Sagacious, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Our story began in Bruce Hall, which is the music dormitory at UNT. None of us were in the school of music but were musicians so the musical environment brought us together. After we finished school, we all moved to Dallas and were spending a lot of time in the bars wondering what to do with ourselves. It became obvious that forming a band was our only option. So, we wrote a few songs and called our friend Jake to play drums and in 2 months we played our first open mic at The Free Man and in 3 months we sold 105 tickets at Green Elephant. We moved into a house together and have been like family ever since.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
When we started as a band, we didn’t have any preconception about what kind of music we were going to make. We still allow any sort of inspiration to flow freely in the composition process. We make the music that we want to hear, that has energy and that people can dance to. Even though we’re holding the instruments, we view music as a communal process, a sort of healing or respite through connectedness. Through music, we try to explore the landscapes of human relationships and the rapid evolution of our world, society, and of our personal lives.

What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Go out and see other musicians, get in the scene, support and learn from everybody. Don’t drink too much, don’t hurt each other, don’t get in fights. Always bring extra strings and sticks, cables, and don’t leave any gear at home! Jake!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
We’re currently working on getting some recordings out to the world!!! And we’re playing live shows around Deep Ellum and other Dallas and Denton spots. Deep Ellum Art Company is currently our homebase. Tangible ways people can support us would be to follow us on social media, keep up with our calendar, come out to shows and buy merch!
